The fact that they used their secondary set-ups, their "B" rigs isn't very surprising, but it is kind of interesting. It's the same thing as when they went to some Asian dates and South America on the last tour. I didn't realize Croatia would be a place where they would do the shows with the "B" rigs.

Why is it surprising? That's why they have them...especially with fuel cost increases kicking the sh#$t out of cartage costs...scaled down is how you roll.

I wouldn't really call 'em "B rigs". OK, you're right, Portnoy did have a smaller setup then usually, "only" a double bass, but that doesn't bother me. Petrucci on the other hand had this exact same setup, only with a Silhouette bass. Rack, 2 cabs (both miked), 4 guitars, pedalboard. The cabs he usually has are 'for show' only 2 are actually miked.

Keep in mind you saw him play 4 guitars, but usually he tours with like 15...each different tuning he uses and a backup for each roughly...so that's 2 7's, 2 in E, 2 in C, 2 in D, 2 in dropped D, 2 A bari's, 2 Bb bari's, and the double neck...

Actually, I said it wasn't surprising. I just said that I didn't realize Croatia would be one of those reduced cost gigs.

Here is the deal with touring to remote spots. Sometimes the frieght kills you or local tarrifs or small guarantee makes it so you have to make a deciseion to not play the market or go in slimmed down...
