I've been giving serious consideration to selling off most of my basses, and just keeping my Sterling and Thunderchief, and maybe the Steinberger. I'd then add a second Sterling to the stable, and a Bongo five. I keep coming back to the fact that my Sterling is my most playable and versatile bass - it melts in my hands, and I find myself being able to play it without much conscious thought. In other words, a perfect fit.

Anyway, I've found having a specific lust object is a real motivator, so I'm sitting around thinking up what flavor Sterling I'd want. (The Bongo's easy - either Desert Gold or Lava Pearl with a white Pearl guard.)

My current Sterling is a Blue Pearl with white Pearloid and a Rosewood board. I want the second one to be a Maple board, and I have a killer Abalone guard on the shelf.

What goes good with Abalone and Maple? Black? Natural?

The Abalone guards aren't loaded in the Build-a-Instrument engine, and I'm having a hard time visualizing what would look good. Suggestions?

i agree re: the sterling's versatility. no matter how many new basses i buy they always end up in the back seat. i just feel at home with the sterling. and hot damn that neck is just butter!!!

black w/ abalone would look nice but maybe a tad conservative

I quite like the Graphite pearl with the moonstone pick gaurd. I am sure Abalone would look good too. Egyptian smoke is a color to gas for as well.

Here's Bassmonkee's first white bongo with the abalone guard. One of the nicest MMs I've seen...

I've seen your bass a lot but when you see the before and after pictures, WOW. It's amazing what a little dress up can do for a bass.

By the way, can we see a few pics of the 2 SR5's together?
How about all 3 of my Music Men?

Wow, ask and you shall recieve, thanks. Beautiful basses. I guess I forgot you had that Bongo, it is a great color also.

What strings do you use on each bass.

I use T-I Powerbass 345 rounds on the fretted basses and Regular E-B Slinkies on the fretless.

I like the black with the abalone! However, that lefty raises an interesting possibility - some kind of complementary green or blue.

Hmmm...

The sub-title thing says Envy Green, but the description says Radiance Red. But wait! Just a bit further down the guy/girl/company/entity says it's Envy Green again! We have a flip-flopper here, gentlemen! :p
