Duff McKagan w/ a Stingray

So i was watching this show on VH1 called Inside Out and they had all this documentary footage of the GnR guys starting Velvet Revolver etc ...

During all the footage (2003-2004) Duff was playing a Black/black/rosewood Stingray. He pretty much played that bass through what seemed like up untill their first gig at the El Ray; then he busted out the old Fender PJs youre used to seeing him w/ since the GnR days.

Ive always dug Duff and think it would be dope if he was an MM player ... looks like he tried to be but got drawn back to the dark side. I always remember him using PJ basses so that may be the reason he stick to those only fenders. I bet if he played an HS Ray he'd switch to MM ... ill put $5 on it

Yep, saw that last night and the Ray looked damn good on him...

all i know is, he tried MM in the past, but the Stingray's battery crapped out on him during a song, and from then on he was leery about them and the actives (b/c of the battery).

but his old mainstays will prolly always be those Jazz Deluxes (those p-bass with p/j config's.)

If that is really the reason he went back to his PJs, well, ahem, cough cough.....

Ah, never mind. It's too tempting since I've always completely detested GnR.

It sounds to me more of a case where he may prefer the StingRay but is almost "expected" to play what has become sort of a trademark bass for him. It's either that or he heard that Nyswonger plays one too and we all want to be like Nyswonger right?

Ah, I tried my best to convert Bob Nyswonger, I really did - and he did say that if he had any money, he'd add a Bongo to his big old Jazz Special collection.

I'm still stoked that he played that Bongo of mine with the Psychodots!

I think if I were in Duff's position, I'd have been more bugged out at my tech than the active bass.

those fenders he plays look like the same damn ones from the early GnR days. im surprised those things survived ... i mean, duff barely did.

ive always thought he was pretty underrated, but i guess thats what happens when youre in a band w/ slash and axel - u just kinda get overshadowed pretty easily

He said something in Guitar World's Bass Guitar last year about having a bad experience with an active bass at an MTV concert. He got up and played the first few notes and there was no signal at all. He says the battery was dead.

He didn't specify it was a Stingray and it doesn't really sound like it was one.

If his diagnosis of the situation was correct, it's not active basses he has a problem with, it's his tech.

sorry BP, if my information was incorrect, but it was in Bass Guitar, and if i'm wrong, i do really apologize. its from what i can remember, and thought he said it was an MM, but if i'm wrong, again, my apologies!

and yes, it does sound like the tech needed to make sure the battery was still running in the bass, but he just threw Duff the old Jazz special (or whatever model it was). again, my apologies.
