any one use either, for just jamming or playing out for a gig??? Ran into this site pretty cool info and some cool plugs for sale, pricey but they seem worth it. Lately ive been uber conscience regarding my hearing. I play for my church 3 times a week, and in several bands as well so things can get quite loud on stage. Lately ive gotten home and while i'm laying in bed i can hear a nice high pitch goin on and i def dont want it to get worse. Nice of my brain to say u better do something b4 things get bad he,he. Just wondering what u guys use if anything.

heres the link.

you must protect your ears at all times. In ear monitoring is very good but also expensive. The main complaint is it isolates you from the audience, you can get custom plugs made to protect your hearing for not a lot of money.

I think a lot of the damage I've done to my ears was caused by cymbals. Don't get caught by thinking if your amps on the floor it will protect you.

yep, get the custom plugs, worth every penny.

on the IEM side of things, if you can get a great set-up (like Aviom) then go for it! I use that with my main gig (Brian Doerksen) and it sounds awesome. A bit tough to get used to at first but now if we don't have our Aviom rig with us, I get nervous :p (monitor guys aren't always glad to be "monitor guys" and hence, mixes can get bad , quick)

i totally agree with u colin, i think most of the damage although minimal that i do have has been from cymbals. Damn drummers cant live with em cant live without em lol.....and psychicpet, ive heard nothing but awesome things regarding aviom rigs....Def gonna look into them. Im only 28, feel like i'm coming into my own as a guitar player and i intend to be playing for a very long time, god willing with all my hearing. =D

I'm a big fan of my in-ear monitor system. Rarely when i'm playing an outdoors gig, i'll prefer a monitor. That's VERY rarely though. Westone makes some KILLER ears (I use the UM-2s) and any Shure pack will do just nicely. :)

having custom made ones are very expensive.

If you don't want to fork out that kind of money, maybe look into some of the regular models for monitors.

companies like Shure, Etyomic Research, Westone, and Ultimate Ears do a great job at providing sound isolating in ear monitors.

I have a pair of Ultimate Ears Super. Fi 5 Pro's for my regular music listening while I travel outside on the bus and what not. With them in my ear, I cant even hear a bus drive by. They certainly block out a lot of sound. These might be a more economically viable alternative to having custom ones made.
