Early JP pups

Hey gang, if you you read the Looking for a case thread, you already know I just scored an '03 JP6. (Very geeked about it!) Anyway, one of the things I loved about this guitar when it came out was the sound. So I was intrigued when I discovered all the pickup changes over the years. Can anyone give me a rundown of the different pup combos over the years and the reason for the changes.

The neck pickup was the same from the guitar's introduction to last year, when it changed to the Liquifire. It was a custom pickup strongly based on the DiMarzio Air Norton.

The bridge pickup started as a Custom wind that was based on the DiMarzio Steve's Special, then changed to the D-Sonic, then last year changed again to the Crunch Lab.

The reason for any such changes on signature MM guitars is always as simple as that's what the signature artist wanted.

Thanks for the info! Yea, I had heard that the original bridge pup was a variation on the SS. I'm actually a big fan of the original Steve's Special. Never heard the D-sonic or the crunch lab. Curious to know what everyone's opinion is of each. And what they think the best pup is for the JP6. I really like the tone, so I'm not necessarily inclined to change them, but I'm not averse to some pup swappin' either.

I'm a big fan of the original pickups. For the music I play that combination simply work better for me than the others. The different combinations all sound good, so it is entirely up to your ears to pick which is best.

IMO the original bridge pup is very close to sounding like the new Crunchlab. The Dsonic works better for me in the original JP. I like the Dsonic in the BFR's the least. I thhink the new pickups are a result of JP dialing them in since he's had more time on the BFR's.

My JP has the original pickups. Just sold my 6, the 7 has the same ones tho. I prefer them to the newer ones (or at least the D sonic anyway). The bridge has more beef.

I changed the Dimarzio PAF Pros and the custom wound single in my EBMM Silo to the Andy Timmons AT-1 bridge pickup and the middle to an Area 67 and the neck to an Air Norton. They sounded great! Except the Air Norton was a little too "boomy" sounding. So I changed that to a Liquifire and its perfect now. Just the right amount of bass/mids/treble and output. I tried the Crunchlab in a BFR a while back at a Guitar Center. The Crunchlab was a bit too "scooped" sounding for me, but the Liquifire just kicks all kinds of ass.
