It isn't the 'idea' that I don't like, it's that I look at it this way: I play bass. I'm not a wild-ass Jaco-worshipping solo bassist, I'm Mister In The Pocket guy, looking for the spaces and not just the notes. Now I play fivers, as I've said before, because of songs in D. I think regular D on the A string sounds not quite right, so my problems with D have been solved by playing fivers.

I could count on one hand the number of times I've actually used low B and thought it wasn't a mistake.

I can see soloists and wankers (not that there's anything wrong with that) and guys who play with, I don't know, Bela Fleck, say, using all those high notes on a C string. I can even listen to it and think, at least for a while, "Hey, that's cool."

Then I go back to perfecting some old Stax tune and never think too hard about even my G string.

Sixers? More power to 'em. Me? I'm old enough and know myself well enough to realize that it just isn't me.

A big +1 from me on this one. Except I don't (and won't) use a 5, for much the same reasons as 6's are avoided. I use my hipshot to get that D!

Eh--soloing is fun! I can hold down the pocket as well as the next guy, but I restrung my Black Sapphire Bongo with TI Flats tuned EADGC last night so I could get back into chordal work and some higher register solos. Plus, with three 5 strings set up with flats, I figured I had enough to get some different tunings going...

One of my big problems with 6 string basses (besides the numb hands trying to reach down to the low B on a six string neck) has always been that the high C string tends to get lost in a mix with the rest of a band playing. I think the 4 band Bongo EQ is ideal to dial in a usable sound that will help the higher string cut through when I am playing across the neck.

I haven't set it up, yet, but I'll be sure to let everyone know how the compensated nut works with the tuning.

I can't make it this year but Dude will be there and will hook you up at the EBMM booth. He's placing some orders so make him work!

(you know the color)

Well, I hear rumors. If Dude doesn't treat you right, you let me know and we'll do a deal behind his back, heh heh.

Well since this thread was resurrected, I almost jumped from 4 to 6. I wanted to be able to do easy two octave runs all over the place. The weight and the lack of a 6 from my preferred brands killed this John Myung fantasy.

Heh, since this thread was awakened I will now say this: If there came to be that there was a signature model for some famous bassist, and that bass just happened to be a 6-string Bongo, I think I would buy one. I think.

Have you seen what Jauqo does with his basses?

Gs are for treble-loving wimps. Same goes for Ds and As.

He strings his 4 string C# F# B E.

If god had wanted us to play 6 string basses he'd have given us more fingers.
