I caught a double header at the Montreal Jazz fest about a week ago, Steve Miller with the Doobie Brothers opening. The show was great... although, the Doobie Bros. definitely suffered from the "opening act sound syndrome"... but they still delivered the goods.

I was kind of taken aback when Steve Miller and his band took the stage along with Pat Simmons of the Doobies, and there was no bass player anywhere in sight... ouch! Bass duties were handled for the most part by Joseph Wooten's left hand (yup, Victor's brother). About midway through the show Kenny Lee Lewis (who up until this point had been playing guitar) steps out with a very familiar looking instrument in his hands... a beautiful sunburst Classic SR5. I managed to get a few shots.

Oddly enough, Steve chose to play "The Joker" unaccompanied on his acoustic... if there ever was a song that screamed out for bass...

All in all it was a great show (I just wish that the Doobies sound had been as pristine as Steve's).

yeah, great songs! I just don't know about two drummers. Geez, one is enough!!

Yeah, I thought that was kind of strange too. For the most part they play exactly the same thing. And it was part of their sound problem too, they had the drummers on these four foot high risers on either side of the stage that acted like giant boom boxes pretty much turning the low end into this giant blurred mush.
