So, on my drive home from Dallas I had this craaazzzZzzZZzZZZZZyyyyy idea!

What if we put together tunes from all the forum members (band or individuals, doesn't really matter to me; I guess you guys could decide if there's enough interest), and we put them all together on a CD that's either REALLY cheap for us to all share our music or free (if someone volunteers to pay for it all! :D ) and have an official forum album.

I'd be willing to handle all the logistics, master the music, mix it (if it needs to be mixed), handle all the artwork, the CD printing and distribution. It's a lot of work but I think it would be worth it. :)

Cost-wise, when I did this for my band, a 1hr CD with an 8 panel full-color inserts, 3 color disc, full color traycard and back, it cost about $2000 for 1000 CD's plus about $350 to have it professionally mastered.

The only nice thing about that is that they end up costing $2/ea. The mastering was done by the legendary Jerry Tubbs (anything you've seen that says Live at Austin City Limits he mastered for instance) here in Austin Texas. Now, he doesn't have to do it, I *can* do it, but he will definately do a better job. The difference is I'm free, he's not. :)

I figure the songs should be 4 minutes maximum, that would allow 15 songs per disc (if we ended up with enough for two, which would be really cool!).

If we end up with too many submissions, they'll just be voted on and songs will be picked by variety to round the disc(s) out.

I'm double-posting this in the Guitar/Bass forums since I know lots of people don't frequent both.

Well, I just wanted to throw this out, see what interest was like. :)

What do you guys think? :D

I also think this is a great idea ...
there is a lot of talent posting onto this board.
I was in the studio at the weekend just putting together a couple of tracks - first recording session using the Stingray with my new band - really happy with the results.
I'll post the tracks onto our myspace page in a few days when I convert them to mp3 - be interested to hear people's opinions and (constructive) criticism : )

It would be great to get out our music to people you know will appreciate it and your playing. Count me in for a track.

I would contribute a song.

I think they have to be original songs in order to avoid licensing issues.

All contributors would also have to sign some Wonderdog forms . . . . . . . .

And permission would be needed from EBMM.............

i like the concept although i tend to prefer to contribute bass solos rather than songs. and instead of a 15 track CD we can make a 100 Tracked MP3 CD (sort of)

As long as the CD is not sold for profit, cover tunes are perfectly legal. It's no different to a cover band producing a demo CD to distribute to booking agents and venues (or a band playing covers tunes for that matter). If it's a freebie CD, or one sold for the cost of postage, there are no license issues involved. I've been down this road before, and that's my understanding.

FYI, the Gibson forum at the Dudepit issued an all-Gibson CD last year, and before that a general "all brands" double CD was compiled by Dudepitters. A CD like this is a great idea, assuming someone hasn't already thought of it
