I...have a couple of reasons to not enjoy the Low End.

This is number three. Sorry, man - if I would have been more alert, this wouldn't have happened, but I was taken by the finish.

Brian owes you.

I don't want to speak for Smallequine, but if it were me, yes, I'd certainly be mad that he lied to me. Even though the sound is probably fine (apparently the defret was professionally done), the resale value is going to go down appreciably. And if you spend any time here at all, you'll know that many of us buy/sell basses at an alarming pace.

Retailer's should not speak of that which they do not know for sure.

I worked at a VERY honorable store here in CT for years, and would have been fired in a heartbeat for something like this. To the owner, reputation was more important than a sale...

Thanks for the support guys. I don't know if he lied purposely, afterall it was a used piece that he had recieved on a trade, and he might have not known. I am willing to give him the benifit of the doubt that this was not intentional. The resale is screwed on this beacase of the defret and the finish crack. I think I am going to give him a call and see what he has to say. Maybe something can be worked out.

He indeed might not have known for sure, but then that is what he should have said to you. It is obviously very easy to check these things out with EB/MM (as you just did).

I'm not saying he lied, which is purposely telling an untruth. I'm saying that he vouched for something he did not know for sure, seemingly to help get a sale.

I think you've got a good plan though. Give him a call and give him the chance to make it right...

couldn't you just have looked at the side dots?

wouldn't they be in a different location on a freted than a fretless?

I only have a fretless sr4 or i'd compare.

thanks

Before you said that, Joel, I couldn't have told you if my SR5 even HAD side dots.

I had to look - it does, and you're right.

But this is all hindsight. I was there when he bought the bass and we were all so taken with the finish and the beauty of the thing that no one was looking that closely at the neck.

I am thinking that the good news is that it must play and sound great. I didn't play it, but it ain't like our purchaser here is brand new at this game, so I trust it did and does play fine....right?

You're right Jack. It looked so good and, of course, sounded so good that we didn't even question the originality of it. As I remember, he was playing through a Low End pre through a Schroeder cabinet and it sounded great. Not having seen but a couple of lined fretless SRs before, I doubt that I could notice that it wasn't original anyway.

I had actually played a couple of lined Stingrays, and Sterlings before. It wasn't until I read this thread that I could actually picture those instruments in my head, and yes there were no dots. And while my knowledge of basses is greater than my playing ability, I had no idea about the specifics of EB lined fretlesses. Truth of the matter I will probably be happy keeping this, it however is going to put the kaibash on my plans for either a fretless Bongo or fretless HS Sterling. Because of my playing ability and financials I have a hard time rationalizing more than two bases (fretted and fretless) at a time.

And yes, it does play good. Through my Nathan East parametric and Ampeg b100r I get a nice sound warm kinda organic tone.

BTW, here is a picture of the mysterious case crack
