Hi Tom,
Do your reissue Luke 1s have SA57 single coils (as per the originals) or are they the SLVs as per Luke IIs?

Craiguitar,

To be honest Craig they sound the same to my ears but I really do not know. I seem to remember in a thread a few years back, it was stated that the pickups in the reissues were identical to the originals. I wish I could confirm for you one way or the other. Is there a some type of marking on the pickups that I could locate to confirm this? Your question has peaked my curiosity to be honest. If there is I might take a peek and let you know what I find.

One thing I can tell you that is different about the reissues that I have come to observe over the last few years is that I am able to set up the original Luke to a much lower action, (at the bridge), resulting in the bridge pickup being at least 50% closer to the strings than the reissues. The result is a much hotter bridge tone experience.:D Maybe the older EMG 85s were simply a bit taller than the newer pickups. I really do not know, but the distance from the string to the bridge pickup on the 95 is 50 percent closer than in the reissue with the same overall action settings. They have different bridges and I suspect this may be the culprit as the older bridge when set up for the same action sits more inside of the route than the new bridge. The result is the obvious closer proximity to the emg 85.

I know no two guitars are the same so this may just be an example of that principle, however it has a rather large impact on the tone. Both work great, but the original has a more of a hot rod sound as a result. My Sledge L1-re pickup is not as close as the 95's bridge either, however it does not seem to suffer as much from the lack of "hot-ness". Perhaps the proximity of the sledge pickup is close enough to generate the needed signal as to not have a perceived loss in tone. Incidentally both my 95 and Cheery/Pearl red L1-re were set up by the same person. I never had the Sledge L1-re set up as it came from EBMM set up amazingly from the get go. Perhaps I could have gotten the Sledge closer to the 95 with respect to the bridge pickup, I just did not see the need as it plays and sounds superb for me at this point.

I am going to have a guitar tech look at my Cheery/Pearl Red reissue and see what can be done about getting the action near the bridge pickup closer. It has noticeable reduction in signal compared to my 95 luke 1.

Big Poppa, please make these beautiful instruments available to the US for purchase.

Cheers,

Tom

It would be interesting to know. I'm sure I read somewhere that the reissues did have SA57s as the originals, but what intrigued me was, those pickups aren't manufactured anymore by EMG, as they were superseded by the SLVs which do sound different, much more vintage / overwound sounding, and although they're also very good, one thing I'd insist on with any Luke 1 is it must have SA57s, as they do have a quite specific character.

EMG Custom SA (single coil) pickups. It doesn't say if they are SA57 pickups.

Don't want to derail the thread, but this is what Derek said a few years ago. Copy and pasted from the link in my previous reply above.http://forums.ernieball.com/music-man-guitars/music-ma...e-2-print.html

According to EMG these are the same pickups as the Luke models from 93-96. We asked for the same spec's as before.

I wish I could A/B them, but I've never played or seen a reissue. A/Bing old school 90's EMG SA in my Schecter strat vs the SA 57 in Luke I: they sound similar, in the same ball park.

However I prefer the SA57's vs SLV's in the Luke II. I also like the EMG-X version of the SLV's vs the Luke II's SLV's. Honestly, when I got my first Luke II, I thought the guitar was broken because the single coils had no "oomph" that I was used to.

Bottom line to me, I love the old SA57's or straight SA's vs. SLVs.

I'm patiently waiting for the next in the sparkle series. Hoping for a blue sparkle or silver burst sparkle.

I only hope they will skip next year's PDN run. Haven't been able to resist buying one the past few years...

LOL! Love it.

My hope are new tops and colors: FLAMED koa (not the lame loa veneers used on the JP, etc.), spalted maple, tamo ash....pink, flat black, and, well, there are millions of colors to choose from.

I am a mega-fan of the ALHH. Personally, I'd love an AL that was HSS or even just HS (since that is my preferred config). But, I realize that is probably unique to me, so I'd love to see an EBMM custom shop where I could spec and order what I'd love to have in a gigging guitar (not that there is ANYTHING wrong with my ALHH!!)
