Most of them look like sperm whales with birth defects, but that's probably just me.

...And this from a guy that waged a bloody "anti-toilet seat" campaign?????? Jeesh.

To each their own. I own one by a one-off builder from FLA. Not my impression of its looks or those by other designers
Maybe you need glasses or a course in aesthetics, I dunno.
YMMV, IMO etc. I'd like to see one.

He just said he didn't like them. So, you suggest he take a class or get his glasses checked? Over react much?

Y'know what? I think they're ugly as sin too. I'm solidly with Jack on this one.

But if it sounded amazing and played likewise, I'd buy one anyway. Because it's not a wall hanging, it's a freakin' MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. It exists to sound good, not look good.

If the Bongo has taught us anything, it's that those who shun an instrument solely because they don't like its looks are just plain shortsighted.

I contend that the reverse is true as well. For me, it's about an instrument's ability to sound good. If I happen to think it looks great, so much the better.

Some people like them and that's okay with me.

Some people don't and that should be okay with you.

Questions? I'm here to help.

Adouglas, my thoughts exactly. I'm not totally anti-single-cut but generally speaking they're not my preference. As Erin said, the Reflex is a single-cut as far as I'm concerned - kind of a take on a Telecaster from my point of view. It's not my favorite shape by any means but when the Reflex GC comes out in a 5-string I will buy one anyway.

Tone is #1 priority for me. Playability is important but can be altered to some degree and also adapted to. A nice appearance is a plus but when you're playing the thing you're not really looking at it anyway so it's mainly for the benefit of onlookers.

If we all played saxophone I'm pretty sure appearance would not even be a consideration.

I could imagine a bass version of that badass new EB guitar with the set neck btw.

And there are some rad sc's out there as well as some...well, less good looking ones.

I am pretty sure Dudley would come up with a good one if he had to.

IRRC "set neck" originally comes from acoustic guitar's where the neck is permanently glued (or "set") to the body and cannot be removed. I would consider the construction of Scott's new beauty to be a "neck though" but Scott and Dudely can call it what every they want... as long as they make a Bass version of it!!!

Oh, and taking this back on topic... My Reflex are the closed to "single cut" as I want to get. I actually like the Les Paul design but I think there may be a reason why the BMW designers (who surely know more about design than I do) did not choose a single cut design for the Bongo ;)

Its funny, my wife thinks a Bongo looks great but She tends to get a little sick every time I show here a picture of a single cut :p

Yep, that's JUST what a single-cut bass looks like.
I repeat...

...And this from a guy that waged a bloody "anti-toilet seat" campaign?????? Jeesh.

And no, no questions. I get 'ya. A-yep.

Most of them look like sperm whales with birth defects, but that's probably just me.

He just said he didn't like them.

Read Above. Not QUITE what he said, eh??

So, you suggest he take a class or get his glasses checked? Over react much?

Not really, Tonto!:D

Here's the deal, IMO FWIW :

See, I was looking at my Bongo just before I posted...and I was noticing how the lower bout offsets the body in a very unique way, and adds to the wonderful ergonomics; it has Purpose!!
Really excellent, but has been scorned by some! Can ya believe it??!

Now, me; I really dig a good SC Bass, several builders take it to a great level. And the original thought behind a (neck through) SC was that there is added resonance from the upper horn being an integral part of the body.

Whether or not this makes a major sonic difference- it does have an effect and is a valid design concept.

It's even been done in a bolt-on versions including one particular builder who has an ingenious one-bolt system of attaching the neck- (Hint- he used to be an architect as well!)

So I got to thinking/imagining:
If MM's design team, or BMW, whatever, took on the task, and proto'd their own version of an EBMM SC, with the incredible MM p/up and pre-amp variants- Wow, I think they could hit it out of the park.
I can easily see a unique and asymetrical SC shape and if it were presented, I will bet the farm that there would be drools over it, from the same "they're fugly" criers too!

It would happen. Lotta fan-bois here, including ME!!

And true, like a Les Paul or a Tele (ASAT) and Reflexs , there are pared-down versions of the SC design.

My SC is one of the most graceful fluid basses-in design, shape, and visual- I own, and it's tonewoods, electronics, along with the SC design, make it an outrageously DEEP bass, absolutely awesome. Whenever I gig it, it gets rave reviews on tone and appearance. Like the Bongo- A chick-magnet.

I'd post a pic but this is the MM forum; besides we have an accurate depiction of a SC posted already, do we not?

MY SC:
Doesn't look anything like the cartoon "Jaws" version above.
Again: Can 'Ya Believe it??!!

I will still maintain an EBMM SC design would be a WIN!

Would it be for everyone?? Well, obviously not, as we can see!

I currently have (2) MM basses, a H Sterling and a Bongo- I don't care personally for the Big Al or the Reflex body shapes; but I don't comment that they are "pointy" or "boring"; I actually think they are kewl- just not my thing.

IMO, YMMV, etc.

Have a nice Holiday!
