Holy crap that Sterling looks like a piece of high end custom furniture! Gorgeous! My Sterling is neither quiet, nor unassuming. It gets noticed every time I play it and people are ALWAYS telling me how good it looks and how good it sounds. I love the bass because of the feel of the body. It reminds me of a Corvette or a Camaro. Sleek. Compact. Sexy.
I don't love my Bongo or my Stingray any less. It's just that the Sterling brings a different vibe to the table -- especially the HS configuration. If I had to pick one bass to recommend to a lifetime "Non-EBMM" player", this would probably be the one. It's got the EBMM sonic character but it's also got enough "other" tones to allow an EBMM Newbie to find some familiar territory.
Its not as "iconic" as the Stingray, nor is it as unique as the Bongo/Big Al/Reflex. As a matter of fact, it may be the most "conventional" looking of all the EBMM basses.
That said, it's still a killer instrument.
