Hello Folks,
Does anyone have experience "Ebonizing" (staining) a MM rosewood fingerboard / Fretboard black?
I have a Sterling Ray 34 with maple / Rosewood that I'd like to stain. Stew Mac sells some stuff to do it with and most reviewers said that they had good luck. I would just like to learn from anyone who's worked on MM bass specifically. Respond with your pictures too.
Thanks!

Piece o'cake. I've done this quite a few times. I use a Qtip and generously apply the stain to the board. Let it sit for about a half hour then wipe it off. I repeat this once a day for five days then I let it completely dry for a week or so. Come back with a pencil eraser and clean up your dot inlays.

Wow, thanks for the detailed pictures! Looks Awesome!

Did you also stain the top and bottom edges of the rosewood too?

On mine, there is finish on those edges that I think I'd have to sand off. Not real excited by that and will probably just leave them brown.

I'm also worried about any drips or seepage onto my maple neck. You used a black sub neck so you probably didn't have to worry about that. Do you think there is any concerns about seeping into the maple neck?

Last question, did you find that there was any issues with stickiness or residue getting on your fingers when playing? Or does it play just like the rosewood did?

Thanks!

It dries completely. The black neck on the sub does make it easier for sure. I just used it an an unfinished bubinga/rosewood Warmoth neck and it turned the rosewood black simply darkened the bubinga. Looks stunning.

I'd be tempted to do this to my Ray, but I'm afraid I'd screw it up. I love the look of Ebony on my Al.
