I like ebony a lot actually... more so than maple if I want a bright-toned fretboard wood. I like the fact that it needs no finished and it sounds different than maple too. More of a high-fi treble detail that accentuates your dynamics as opposed to a trebly snarl off of maple or a smooth growl off rosewood.

That pic was a background on my computer for quite some time... and if you take a threesome pic, that'll probably make its way back. Right now I have A roasted maple pet pic... next will be my GC 46th JP... only 5 more days tilll I can have it.. :D (it'll be my first with an ebony board... i've preferred the look of maple lately... I feel that I like the look of a really light or dark board... rosewood doesn't stand out how'd i like... with my current eyes )

Dizz, how long till your GC BB shows up?

I own guitars with ebony, rw, and maple and I can't say I prefer one over the other. I actually enjoy the differnces in feel and tone, and the differences are what makes it fun to play various guitars. Different guitars for different feels and tones is what it is all about for me.

Diz those two guitars are just slamming as eye candy that I can assure, and would figure they sound as good as they look.

I am shocked at how low the maple boards are rating though. I was never a fan of a finished maple board but an unfinished one is right up there with Rosewood to me. Then again I guess you guys are a bit spoiled having them all to yourselves all these years.lol

Yeah, they are fantastic guitars.

Both are the NAMM showpieces I scored last year.

The BFR's are definately my favourite though.

I already have a DDII BFR, so the regular one pictured has to go to make room for the incoming BB BFR.

It's the #1 DDII JP made, with ridiculous birdseye neck.

Not quite ready to list yet, but it'll be open to international buyers too.

I hear very different tones from the 3 boards, I worked part time in a music shop in the 90's turned out I was allergic to ebony, but hopingit was just a chemical added to the G****N finish -

Would very much like to explore an EBMM with an Ebony board. - And REALLY CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER till my HH AL shows up with an all rosewood neck - think that's going to be a different tone again.

You're thinking is right!

Rosewood is still my favorite. I played the JPX and the blue JP BFR with ebony a few days ago, and it was a little too stiff for my liking. But then again, the necks were finished and they had 10s, but I like to use 9s.

Untill I got my Stealth JP7 I thought that I had been fully rosewood freatboard guy. Even though I kinda liked the view of every ebony fretboard.

Then, like two months now, I got the Stealth and ebony freatboard blew me away! It's not only more elegant (in my opinion), but also more playable for me. I like how strings react to this type of wood on the freatboard. I don't know is it real thing or not, but compared to my JP6 LE07 I noticed that the sound from Stealth is more liquid (notice that le07 and stealth have different pickups). Someone mentioned that ebony makes EBMM guitars look metal. I agree, this is definitelty bad ass design, especially on the Stealth finish.

So I got addicited to ebony! In fact, I switched to Stealth and I don't actually play le07 anymore. Just from time to time just to see how six string is doing :) Also I decided to let go my limited and get some new Pet. However, I'm waiting for EBMM to allow us, players, to choose between freatboard wood (rosewood or ebony) on standard JP, which is guitar of my personal choice :) I just dream to get white jp7 with ebony and black hardware - would be a great company for steath :))

best,
Mike

I prefer the looks of ebony. Not sure it really factors all that much into tone or feel. I have it on my custom Hamers and have always just been attracted to it. I agree that the cherrybursts would just kill with ebony.

Good question, Dizzy.

I much prefer a rosewood fretboard over maple. However, I have an ebony board on my Koa Luke and I really do like it. Ultimately, it probably depends on the other woods on the guitar. If the guitar didn't have warmer sounding tone wood like mahogany and koa, I probably wouldn't want an ebony fretboard because the guitar would be too bright for my tastes. However, on that guitar, I like it a lot. Having said that, my other guitars with rosewood fretboards aren't going anywhere. Going forward . . . who knows? :D

I always preferred rosewood over ebony or maple. (I qualify this by saying that I've never owned a guitar with ebony, but have played quite a few.) My Axis changed my opinion, though. I bonded with it pretty quickly and discovered that I quite like maple when it's not finished. Now, I'm not sure that I don't prefer maple on EBMM guitars. I'd still go for rosewood on anything else for sure.

I went back easily. Rosewood, and even maple feel better to me. The DDII BFR always seemed to feel somehow weird for that reason...

I think you have no over choice than trying :)

problem is that with those limited run like the roasted neck it's a gamble, it's either all good or all bad (well it's never bad with EBMM, anyway) ...

BP is so tough on us :p
