There doesn't appear to be a signature on the headstock (EVH or Axis) so I would bet fake or Axis EX

Axis EX, parts sent to Japan and assembled there. Non-book-matched top is the give away. There were some in-between EVH and Axis models that are EVH's without the sig.

Have you asked customer service to look up the serial number?

Yes, that serial number doesn't exist in their database. Another red flag...

As I said, I'm not buying this - this post is for educational purposes. You have to love the story he was using in the auction about EVH's photographer.

What's "book-matched" anyway? I never understood that term...

If you were to look at the figuring in the top - one side "matches" the other like if you spilled ink on a page in a book, closed it, then opened it revealing an almost mirror image of the figuring on one side as the other. That should give at least a nice visual description, I don't know about technical accuracy...

OK, I know what you're talking about. Let's say the guitar is on a stand with the neck up... there is typically a line running from the bridge down to the base that is visibly where the figuring on the top is mirrored. But why is "book matched" better? Is it a purely aesthetic thing?

It's not better or worse, it's just symmetrical and IMO more visibly striking. Book-matching also gives the builder the ability to use a piece of wood that is narrower in width than the overall body width of the guitar.

The EX was an Axis model only offered overseas.

When EB stopped producing the EVH and before they improved the design and changed the name to the Axis, there was a period of time where there was no model designation on the headstock. This was different from the Axis EX.

AXIS EX = model between EVH and AXIS ????

Never heard before

NO, I didn't say that Axis EX=model between EVH and Axis. Axis EX is an Axis made in Japan with parts sent over from EBMM.

There are some rare EBMM's out there that were EVH's in design but have no sig on the headstock. They are the EVH's that were completed during the time Eddie left and the Axis was born.

I've gone back & forth with this guy. I suspected it was some type of scam. He just keeps saying things like "DUDE, this thing is worth 5 times this price!" and "it sounds AMAZING". Gimme a break...he just keeps sticking to his story followed by "there were only 5 of these made!" PRICELESS

I love those kinds of descriptions. I also always pass them by. Sellers, keep it short and sweet. Otherwise you talk you talk yourself out of a sale. This dude's a prime example.

I thought mines was a slab bodied EX mated with a regular Axis neck but the maple top is 2 pieces. were all EX's one piece tops?
