Does anybody have any advice on how to get the stale smoke, bar at 3 a.m. smell off of your beloved instrument after a gig? the only thing I hate about gigging in bars is that smell. Sorry if I offend any smokers out there, but I can't wait 'till they pass the law here like in NYC that eliminates smoking in all public places. My drummer puts his ash tray on my amp cabinet right next to the amp head, and the fan pulls the smoke right into the amp...and the neck of my Ray smells like a chainsmokers hands after a night of heavy drinking. I guess there is no way around it, and I know that if I get it clean, it will only get afflicted again next Friday night...but I was wondering if you guys had any miracle cures...thanks.

Fabreze works nicely on cases. Of course make sure it is dry before putting your bass back in the case.

Don't know what to tell you about the bass.

I have actually learned to leave the case in the car, or in some places we play, they have a "backroom", were we leave our cases and coats and stuff. I use Febreze on my car interior after I unload it the next morning to get the smell out of my car, it does work nicely. thanks

Newspaper works for tupperware - might work for the case...

Something about the carbon in the ink that works to absorb the odors.

move to seattle. That should do the trick.

instead of the smell of smoke you'll have the smell of coffee and pretentious know-it-all twenty-somethings.

I've lived in California so long it always surprises me when I go to other states and there are people smoking in restaurants and bars.

They passed a law here that forbids smoking in all bars and restaurants. Best thing they ever did in my opinion. I have nothing against smokers in general. I was a pack a day smoker for 15 years. But I was always careful to not offend others. I smoked outside. Didn't leave butts lying around. And NEVER assumed it was ok to park my smokes on anyone elses property!

As for your drummer putting his ash tray on your cabinet. Here's how to drop a subtle hint.

Wait until the ashtray is nice and full. Then pour your beer into it until it makes a nice smelly swill. Then pour it over his head.

Then while he is sputtering and pulling wet ciggy butts out of his hair. Explain to him that you don't appreciate him putting his ash tray there.

Say something nice and diplomatic, like "Listen here, you lousy p*ick! If you put that reeking piece of s*it on my amp again, it's going up your a**!"

Then perhaps he will think twice about his annoying habits.

Have a happy! :D

I keep a dead fish in my case, smoke never seems to be a problem.

Lol, now there's some good advice right there:D

Here smoking in bars and restaurants was banned about a year and a half ago, and although I quit 8 years ago I can't say I'm too happy with the development. true, passive smoking is bad for you, but since the smoke smell went away I realized all the good it did: It covered up the BO:D Dayum does a rockabilly crowd smell:p

I thought of that, but then there is that drummer/bass player relationship to consider...If we don't get along, at least musically, there is no band! I left my bass out on it's stand all day, just got home hoping that it would have gone away, (the smell, not the bass...), but nope, I could smell it as soon as I walked in the room.

there was a nice sticky spot on top of my ampeg cabinet when I unloaded this morning. We are going to put a stop to the "end table" thing...for sure, by non-violent means I hope, but it will stop now...

I have a heated garage so I usually just leave the cases open out there overnight and the smell seems to be much less in the morning.

Slowly here they are passing the no smoking laws too, but it is taking way too much time in my opinion.

Oh, that's a good idea! I air the bass out between gigs, but the case I have to leave closed or it ends up a sleeping place for the cat. I like the baking soda idea, thanks!

I polished my basses the morning after every show before we went smoke free here and that seemed to get rid of the smell.
