I thought of that, but then there is that drummer/bass player relationship to consider...If we don't get along, at least musically, there is no band!

Yeah, I can understand that. I had assumed that you had spoken to the drummer about it before. If not, then perhaps my suggestion was a bit rash.

So, let him know, in a polite manner, that you don't appreciate it. Then, if he continues to put his ash tray where it is not wanted, see my first post! :D

Maybe you could set it on his floor tom between songs?

Ask the guy nicely to stop putting his ashtray on your amp head. If he keeps doing it, find his sweat rag that he wipes his face with and shove it down your pants after a long workout. Then, after he's finished wiping his face and neck down, inform him of what you did.

Keep the case closed as much as poss when in smoky places.

Air the bass well by leaving it in a clean room (out of the case naturally!) for as long as you can (on a stand preferably).

Regular cleaning should take care of everything else (I wipe my basses down every time I play 'em), but as mentioned a bit of febreeze helps both bass and case.

Here at my studio I chain smoke cheap cigars, drink and spill beer, eat Chinese food and keep most leftovers in the trash can which leads to my frequent gastro emissions. I’m fat and sweat a lot and don’t bathe too often and then there is my cat that is plagued with stomach problems and has to have several litter boxes that often overflow.

So for my gear, a stinky bar gig is like tiptoeing thru the tulips on a clear fresh day!
