Most of my guitars are equipped with EMG's. That being said, all but one have either an 85 or an 89 in the bridge (even after trying an 81). After hearing the stuff that you posted I don't really think you need to switch to an 81. But it is a matter of taste. I realize that the 81 is celebrated as a "metal" pickup; supposedly great for leads. But I play heavy stuff on occasion and feel that the 85 covers the material better than an 81. An 81 is "tuned" to match a scooped out eq curve, boosted highs and lows and minimal mids. They sound a bit shrill to me.

BTW Dean, did you put any thought towards my suggestion of using the EMG SPC with the neck pickup? I think you'd be happy with the results.

Well I tried it for a little while (a friend of mine had one lying around), but I like the 85 LOTS better. The 81 is great when you put it in the neck position (that friend used to had it in a Jackson with HH configuration, which sounded good), but in the bridge position it sounds a bit sterile to me. I kinda missed the warmth and depth of the 85.

But hey, If you have 3 of them, just try:eek:
