I would lean toward ENGL based on the fact that Steve Morse has a signature amp with them and its German Engineering :). The fact that Steve uses these amps for his solo stuff as well as Purple really says it all. On the other hand I have not played one whatsoever, and what works for the Master might not work for me...same thing goes for another Beast Mr. Petrucci with Mesa. I am personally frustrated due to the fact that I dont have anywhere to try out all these cool amps even though I live in NYC for preists sake. I hate basing my decission soloely on these "reviews" online as they can be totally deceiving and sometimes...a lot of the times the playing does not help at all.

However, based on the tone coming from Petrucci and Morse, I would not mind having either a Mark 5 and a SM ENGL :D.

I've only played the lower end Engl combo's and whilst they were cool I found the shared EQ to be a bit limiting.

That said having played all of the Boogie's in my price range (DC-3, F30, Express 5:25), I'd have to say that for me Rivera's leave Boogie's for dead.

I had to sell my Clubster 45 to pay some bills but I've recently picked up a used R30 and it makes me soooo happy.

I've recently got myself a Mesa F50 and whilst it might not be considered booteek enough for this thread I couldn't be happier with it. I would agree with others though that it does take a while to get used to how the eq interacts with each other, simply trying to set a mesa up like you would on other amps (fender or marshall for example) wont work, but I guess thats why mesa include suggested settings in the manual so you have a starting point for the tones its capable of. I've ofund the treble and middle controls to be hugely responsive and changes in one greatly changes the other, it was a PITA to start with but now im getting great fat warm clean tones or bright sparkle by just pulling on the bright knob with no need to adjust the settings, plus that 2nd channel makes me grin like a cheshire cat!
