Wow, Meen man, that's excellent! Glad to learn that the heat gun method worked out well for you.

But, are you sure that's alder and not swamp ash?

Did you use Watco Danish Oil?

The heat gun worked fine. No worries about possibly scorching the wood. With a reasonable amount of care, the poly lifted off quite nicely.

I am 100% sure it is alder, and not ash. I have been working with woods for many years. Ash has a distinct open grain, kinda like oak. This alder Silo (DOB 9/08/00) is very tight grained. I agree it has beautiful grain streaks and does appear to look like ash in the pics though. I am currently refinishing a friends 1979 ash Strat, and one can really see the difference in the grains when comparing the Silo to the Stratocaster.

The trans gold Axis Sport in the pic is also ash.

Here is a closer shot of the ash:

Again, if my camera had better resolution, you could really see the open grain of the ash.

I did use Watco (natural) and it really emphasizes and enhances whatever grain exists in the wood.

When I first read you were going to refinish it, I was worried you'd hide the grain the guitar had, which was a shame to me. Turns out you did the opposite! It was not bad to start with, but it's gorgeous now. I love the look of the white pearloid pickguard in the all-different wood colors situation, very classy. How tough is that finish? Does it require extra care?

Alder it is then!

Gotta say, that really makes me want to try stripping a body like that one day. I don't have too much experience, but looks like a great project.
