how did you strip the finish and what did you use?

Well,

I figured the guitar was a total loss after the flood, so I took it to this place that I have used for stripping furniture (chairs, tables, etc...) and had them dip it in their vat. They made me make sure not to hold them responsible if anything bad happened.

So they did dip it. What you should know? The plastic nut and side fret markers melted off and out, and the binding on the neck melted a bit too, just so that it looks a bit like melted wax. What's funny is that the side fret marker holes are still there in the same place as before, but now they're just empty holes!

Then, there was lots of sanding with 3M blocks of various grades by hand. Then a hand applied Tongue Oil finish. That's all I did.

I sandpapered the whole thing because I was worried about using a chemical stripper because of the binding. It took awhile to do but it was summer so anything to get me out of the house and off this computer was a welcome change

Thanks, the guitar has more openess now that the poly paint isn't hindering it anymore. As far as the pickguard it was interesting calling Warmoth (which is located about fifteen minutes from here, but will only take call in orders ) and asking for a completely blank strat pickguard (no mounting holes, pickup holes or volume or tone holes) the guy I talked to was very hesitant and when I told him what I was planing he kinda understood but reminded me if I screwed it up, I couldn't send it back !!!!!So, I didn't
