Hi all

I have a few other questions....

1) What would be the finish on the body? (Polyester, Polyurethane, etc) as I have a bad dent on the lower horn that will need refilling.

2) After years of use, the finger board is quite scummy, any tips on cleaning it up a little?

3) Likewise, on the back off the neck - the wood has lost its natural look, it almost looks yellow (greasy sweaty hands !) - Would a light sanding and refinish with lemon oil be OK?

4) One of the threads on the nut clamp has worn badly due to probable over-tightening. I've also lost the nut clamps !!! - Can I still get a spare nut + clamps? (Would the new axis nut retro-fit OK into the EVH?)

5) Some of the saddles look like they could do with swapping. - Again, would existing Axis spares fit in my EVH OK?

Thanks

Joe

oh, and finally...

Can anybody tell me the DoB of my EVH-EBMM? Serial is 86083.

Hi Joe - welcome to the forum!

The FAQ has detailed answers on neck care in it; click here to open a new window with the FAQ in it.

Polyester is the finish used by EB/MM on all their guitars (with the possible exception of the new SUB range, I suppose).

I can't say for certain, but I know that the Axis nut is the exact same width as the EVH nut, and they use the same tremolo, so any spare parts for the Axis trem system should fit perfectly on the EVH.

DOB is pulled by one of our helpful EB/MM Mods/ee's, and they'll get it for you, but they only stop in a couple times a week as their work schedules permit...

Regarding your scummy fingerboard.... see the FAQ ref. by Jimi D.
If nothing else will work... try shaking up a can of Pepsi and spraying a little on the neck for a quick rub down. NOT! (My dad uses pepsi that way to take road tar/scum off the side of his motor home.... XXXX if it doesn't work too....lol) But let me be clear here...DO NOT try this on a guitar!! hehehe

Wow, it sounds like your guitar needs a lot of work. You should probably just get rid of it, and get an Axis.

I'll tell you what I'll do. I've got a cherry condition Axis, why don't you just send me the EVH, and we'll call it sqare.:D :D :D

Sorry about the gibberish on that last post. There was some gunk on my keyboard so I had tried to clean it off with some Pepsi cola. It didn't work real well. Anyway, back to the thread.

The saddles on Floyd Rose Tremolos during that era were slightly offset where the hex head bolt attaches the saddle to the bridge. I wanted to replace a saddle on a '93 Silo Floyd and Ernie told me they don't have any more of those saddles. When I went to clean the saddles I determined it was necessary to remove the hinge pin that causes the saddle to flex. 3 of the six were frozen and did not flex. (This is the only EBMM guitar I bought used. I knew of its condition before I bought it. I think it was used as a shield in a dirt clod fight.) In removing one of the pins I broke the saddle. Ernie got me the closest replacement part available. But I still had to do some crafting and machining to make it fit. Then your options are to replace all the saddles (which will offset all your strings), or replace the entire bridge. ($150 to $200 depending on how much money your MM retailer wants) Then it's a non original part. When I got the silo one of the things I considered was to send it back to Ernie and let him do the work. That option would have been pricey too. I felt comfortable with my skills and the skills of the local craftsmen here in town to do it myself.

The neck on this guitar was so dirty I didn't know there was a stunning piece of birdseye maple underneath. The luither actually scraped the fretboard to clean it. (Scary at least) He also replaced the first 5 frets and leveled the rest. I did the back with the finest steel wool I could find. (I recommend plastic steel wool. Steel shavings and pickups don't mix) Finally, I did the oil and wax treatment to the neck. The results were fantastic. Your mileage may vary.

While I'm at it. I had a cabinet maker (who also finishes guitars for a local guitar builder) buff the body. I rewired the pups. The original owner had active and passive pups on it and it was just wrong. Also, I changed the pickguard from Black to white pearloid and added the Steve Morse bridge activation switch. For me, rebuilding this guitar was a very rewarding experience.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've currently got on order a new nut and six saddles from EBMM's UK distributor.

I've had a very close look at my saddles and your right that they are offset. I never noticed that before - I'm hopping that EBMM can still supply me these "offset" saddles.

Could anyone give a DoB of my guitar ??
