Wes,
I think you need to just step back look at the big picture. Unless you've done a lot of searches about the subject, you probably haven't been around long enough to know the background on the subject.

EVH's are a sensitive subject to say the least. EB can't and won't deny what they did in the past, but that's just it it's the past and it's time to move on. People are still paying big bucks for an EVH. Does it make sense? Only you can decide. I have one, it was a birthday present from my wife who happened to know that I was a big fan back in the mid 90's. The smart money would have been better spent on an 2! Axis guitars. I've played both and the differences are not worth the markup for the mystique in my opinion. I wouldn't sell mine though because of the sentimental value of it being a present from my wife.

You are talking about a very subjective topic when it comes to tops. One man's 10top is another's general run of the mill top. To say that the EVH's had better tops for whatever reason is just a very short sighted and starry-eyed look at what used to be.

I've seen some very ordinary and dare I say it ugly EVH tops, and I've seen some Axis tops that rival some of the prettiest guitars I've ever seen. It's tyically the luck of the draw and if you've got another $500 to throw around go ahead and order the upgraded top. EB will do their best to get you the nicest top available at the time yours is being built. Will you be happy? Who knows, again it's a very subjective process. I can probably say without a doubt that you will be, but who knows what your expectations are. BP didn't want to do the upgrade thing to begin with, it can cause all sorts of headaches for EB because then there is some expectation on the buyers part that he will get the absolute best top available and if someone else gets one that he feels is better, then he's bitching about the upcharge.

It's a no win situation. And in your observation a pointless subject. Like comparing apples and oranges.

I'm sorry if I'm coming off sounding like and @sshole but you shouldn't come in here making such broad statements like that without knowing some of the background. Sit back and enjoy the ride, it's a great place to hang out. You might even learn a thing or two...

That tobacco burst is beautiful.

And amen to what Jongitarz said. The tops on the Axis and Axis SS guitars that I've seen have been great. I actually had an employee of a local shop try to tell me that the Peavey HP Special model was not only a better guitar than an Axis, but they also had better tops than the Axis or Axis SS. And you'd have to pay about $700.00 more(at least in Canadian dollars) in order to say you owned an HP Special. I'm sure you've guessed that the store he worked at is not a EBMM dealer.... and suffice to say I told him he was nuts.

In terms of quality and price there is no better bang for you buck than a EBMM guitar. And that goes for any of their models.

You never know what the grain of any wood is going to be until you crack the tree open and look inside. It's a natural resource and it varies a lot from tree to tree. That's why it isn't possible to guarantee every guitar will look the same.

I'm a proud owner of an EVH. Have been since '93. I have to say I wouldn't trade my EVH for an Axis, but I've not seen any evidence that the Axis wood is any different (better or worse) than the EVH's.

If it's actually getting better, I'll take your word for it.

I agree, I have seen some KILLER tops on many Axis guitars, and when you add the premium top option LOOK OUT! On the other hand, many EVH's came with some great tops too. I would not trade my EVH's for anything....except another EVH! Enjoy this great forum and the great members and employees of Ernie Ball!:)

Wes....let's not get to calling Pete names here. No need and Pete is a super cool dude. If you ever met him, you would know.

Again, tops being quilt or flame vary. Not one top will be the same as you know, wood can be funny.

Some EVH models have gorgeous tops and some don't....but that is my opinion and mine alone.

I have seen some of the tops (not upgrade mind you) that blow some "AAAAA" tops out the water. I have seen the upgraded tops as well and if you stare at it long enough....it looks like water moving! For the price of an upgrade, it can't be beat.

With anything as great as EBMM's, over time they just get better and better. I believe, my opinion again, that the craftsmanship and selection of tops coming out of SLO are better than they were before. It is almost insane to say it, but EBMM guitars/basses seem to improve each and every day and even the first ones are spectacular! That is why I can't stop buying them!

Personally, I like the top in the pic you showed here. I also love the tobacco burst.
I haven't seen a "bad" top on an EBMM....but I have seen some that were better than others. Simple as that. Wood is funny.........

I hope the one you get is spectacular and floors you. In fact, I am sure it will.

is that an upgradeed top? or do they only have quilted with an upgrade and a regular issue would have say tiger stripe?

When you order a regular top you'll get luck of the draw- flame (that's the "tiger stripe"), quilt, or bit of both. EBMM does their best to get you a good top. Sometimes they're average, sometimes they're phenomenal!

When you order a premium top, you get to choose flame or quilt and you're guaranteed a good one.

PeteDuBaldo quit being a nazi elitist. I'm just asking a question, i'm not knocking EBMM's. I'm going to purchase one any day now.

Wow. Nice post guy. Next time, before you pipe off, maybe watch yourself. Consider me the SS, you're on my list Jackson, and it ain't easy to get off it. Watch yourself.

but I can't complain about my two HP Specials or their tops.;) I hate salespeople like the one you met. It seems like no matter where I go people are telling me I need a PRS, Fender, Gibson, etc. I think it is stupid when salespeople tell me this guitar is better than the next. It all depends on the person.

+1 to what Orange and others have said about this forum and Pete in particular. I have a guit on order from Pete and he was one of the nicest guys I've dealt with ---and I know-- I used to be in retail and worked at a local Guitar place which shall remain nameless. In a newbie here and I'd have to say this is the nicest, most supportive forum I've come across----these guys just won't tolerate rudeness and it seems to be dealt with rather swiftly.

I've got to admit, those tops on your HP's are very nice. Even the two he had in his store were really nice as well. Actually, I've never had a problem with certain Peavey guitars. I really liked the Wolfgangs as well. But since I feel a part of the EBMM family now, I had to defend the family.;)

The funny thing is, he's a guy I've sort of known for about 2 years. A friend of mine works at that particular store so I got to know him as well. I was visiting my buddy and was telling him that I picked up my first Ball(he knows how good MusicMan guitar are)and that's when the other guy offered his two cents and said I should have gone to see him first and he could have set me up with one of the HP specials. That's when I told him where to go. I also told him that I was looking forward to ordering my second ball in the very near future.:D :D
