evh models?

From what I can gather (and I could be wrong), it is due to the name on the axe and it not being made anymore. Obviously, the Axis is the model that came from the EVH with some mods to it. I personally would not pay that kind of money just because of the EVH sig on the head stock. My preference. They are awesome guitars no doubt, but, you can get the same sound out of an Axis and spend less $$$. Someone with more knowledge will certainly chime in to further elaborate on what I said.
I believe people will pay the $$$ if they want it bad enough. Obviously, people are so the price stays through the roof.....

There are some EVH models that *are* considered rare though, are there not? Trans Pink, Trans Black, Trans Green and Solid Gold colors are rare as far as I know. They get a high price in general because they were/are highly sought after guitars, even when they were being made it was hard to find one. Now they've become even more rare. You don't see many owners of those guitars gigging with them either.
Also, as I understand it the Axis is where the EVH came from "technically". The guitar was being designed before Ed came along. He just nailed it down to the maple neck/pickups/blocked floyd and the placement of the switch. At least that's what I've been led to believe.

The neck on the EVH is an exact digital reproduction of the neck on Ed's red and white striped 5150 guitar of the 80's. The Axis neck is about the same but a little wider at the base so it does feel a little different. There are on going debates on this board as to how different they actually are. The specs are slightly different though.
Other differences are: pickup switch in a different location, rear pot cavity route is much larger on the Axis, Axis has a rear body contour. Plus the Sport models did not come around until Ed left the company.
None of these are necessarily improvements or make the guitar any worse. The fact that there are some differences and the fact that there were only about 6,000 EVH's made means they have a certain collectable value.
As with anything collectable, one man's garbage is another man's gold. If it isn't worth it to you, then you shouldn't buy it. Period. I got my EVH new in '93. So techncally, I'm glad they're worth more.
