This is my sentiment also. It really just depends on economics. I've stashed away plenty of times for months, until I can afford a new guitar without disrupting the household income. (Good old bills)

Fortunately I do a lot of freelance work so I split what I earn extra towards a gift for myself as a treat. The rest I use towards my family. While its extra income, it does take away from my family time. Just try and keep things in balance and be sensible.

Buy used if you need to also. Lots of good deals to be had and used can be just as good, save you plenty of dough.

Fully agree...
I've found that when it comes to buying and or selling (learned that one the hard way) that it's absolutley best to do 2 things.
1) Never under any circumstance short the house
2) Always keep the wife in the loop buying or selling they like to know whats going on.

My wife is a musician and knows that this is part of who i am... and supports it. As long as rules 1 & 2 (established by me) are followed i feel comfortable at any point saying I found this EBMM guitar and would like to buy it...

I've also redone 70% of my pedalboard within the last 3-4 months all by trade. It's a less expensive means to getting something different. $4-5 in shipping is more justifiable than 150-200 for a new pedal. There's a lot of great resources for such things just got to know who the good guys are and work with them.

well, i just bought her a new pair of shoes. it is part of the tactic so she won't complain. normally she is very involved in the buying process of a new guitar. at the moment i have 5 guitars, from PRS to Gibson. and 3 EBMM guitars. and almost in each one of them she made comments about how she like the color or the shape of the guitar. and i'm constantly sending her pictures of guitars by email during working hours just to see which one she like the most... and after sending her lots of pictures of guitars and colors (Armada, Reflex, JP13, and Axis) she loved the Axis in trans red. actually she thinks the Axis is a new guitar for 2013 ...jejej well now that i know she loved the guitar...and I love the guitar too... i think is easier to justify the guitar and i Love when she loves a guitar that i Love. because when im on stage i know i'm with her favorite guitar

I try to organise things so that any new guitars are delivered whilst my wife is away on a cruise or visiting her sister in Canada or off on some other jolly. It's a win-win!

The other week I bought a genuine EBMM case and my wife thought she'd caught me out when it was delivered. I opened it with a flourish and triumphantly showed her that it was indeed an empty case. A couple of days later my latest acquisition was delivered (25th Anniversary BFR) whilst she was at work so none-the-wiser. All in all a good week!

TBH my wife is cool and doesn't stop me doing anything, within reason.

Good luck with that my friend. Sounds like a quick trip to the dog house. I learned my lesson in my 1st marriage....you can't win by hiding guitar purchases....she will find out.

Dr. Kev nailed it. See how many marriages last when you are hiding guitar purchases from the wife. Doesn't work. I know from experience. Keep it all on the table and all is good. Now pedals, that ****'s easy to hide! ;)

Unfortunately I have a wife with martyr syndrome. RARELY buys anything for herself which is her choice but has to remind me of that most of the time when I want to make a purchase. Bascially thinks I'm selfish because I don't think like she does. My purchases don't put the house out so to speak but that doesn't matter. Tolerates my music but doesn't really support it per se. I brought my guitar to her sister's house at their request at Christmas and played some songs and she barely said a word about it. Sorry for the long post but to answer your question about excuses to buy a guitar there are none that I can use. So the two guitars in my signature continue to have a high price (the one in brown letters especially) but you know what? It's totally worth it. :) :) :)
