Is the fading in direct proportion to how much time the guitar has spent out of it's case, or do some just go more/faster than others?

I think some go faster than others . My hardtail is faded more on the headstock, than the front .

OK, can someone explain this to a n00b like myself? What causes fading, when does it happen, why, etc.?

Thanks for the welcome everyone. The wife is very cool, no question.

Being a relative new comer to having guitars, how can I tell if mine is a quilt top? The top is certainly beautiful, but I don't want to speak out of school. AJ @ EB advised it was born on 10/23/1991. Any guidance?

It's based on the grain pattern of the maple top. On guitars they are typically referred to as quilt or flame. Quilts look like the one two posts up, sort of little pillows/clouds or quilt patches. Flamed (also referred to as tiger maple in other applications) looks like stripes or flames. Do a quick run through the official pics of my guitar thread and you can see various versions of both types.

here is a link to NorM's thread with a fine example of a flame top and a quilt top next to each other.

thanks MB. Based on that link, there is no question mine is a quilt top. I suspected that, but wanted to be sure.

There are so many beautiful guitars on this forum! I may have to give control of the check book to my wife...YIKES!

Thanks again man.
