Hello. New user from CA. Considering purchasing a hardly used Axis Sport from an acquintance. Looks very clean with no apparent defects or modifications. I know what new Axis guitars are selling for but not sure what a fair price would be to offer. And I don't want to offend this person by lowballing it. If anyone could help me here I'd appreciate it.

Also, does anyone know what pickups MM put in the Axis Sport in the late 1990's? Configuration is an SSH. Thanks.

Best place to check prices is eBay, tho' they tend to fluctuate quite widely there as well... $500 - $750 would be the average range, I imagine - there are still NOS ones out there priced in excess of a $1000, so I guess it depends how badly you want a particular set of features... That being said, there are good deals out there too: I picked up my latest Axis Sport from eBay on a $395 BIN just a couple months ago - and it arrived NOS, basically as nice as the one I bought new for $1100 a couple years prior...

Thank you for the information Jimi D. I especially appreciated the link of your guitars. As my interest in MM guitars is fairly recent, I truly enjoyed the information about the different models and it was great to see such a nice collection....wow!

Update: I purchased an Axis Sport. Not the one I was first considering (asking too much). The one I bought is an older 1999 I'm told. It is trans teal/green w/ SSH config. (You have a beauty this color Jimi!!!) I paid $800 for this one which is alright with me if it is as dead mint as the guy says (purchased on Ebay from a music shop) Anyway... this guitar is supposedly old inventory stock and never sold/owned before in perfect condition ....guess I'll know for sure in a few days. Can't wait to play it!

Doesn't MM do a factory setup before they ship em originally? Anything in particular that I should be concerned about with this year and model guitar? Hope I don't have lots of work to do on this one.... so I can get to playing...

Thanks again.

Old invebtory or a guitar that has been in the store a long time , may not be a good deal.
Often (not always) there is a reason it has not been sold , and it may be a lemon, that no one wants.
Approach old in stock guitars with caution.
Play it before buying if possible.

Pokerman, congrats!! Take a few pictures when you get it we'd love to see it. :D

I don't know I bought me Axis Sport a few months ago it was a new/old stock 2002 and there hasn't been a problem with it. I never played it and I am quite glad with the purchase.

I think it all depends on who you are and what your feelings are about buying guitars you've never played before. I like to look at reputation, I find that it's a good indicator of whether or not what your buying is worth it or not.

Just my $.02 worth.

I think you can find a lot of great deals on NOS EB/MM guitars, largely because they aren't Fenders or Gibsons, and so don't have the big name appeal to draw the number of curious players the other guitars in the same price range might pull... Both my Sports were NOS, and both were just awesome players, with great feel, weight and tone. I can only presume they never sold because no one bothered to pick them up in the first place...
