I also like "the awakening" solo in primus' tommy the cat live. I actually got to play that once in front of a crowd when our lead singer stuck me with a solo the first time I ever played with them and it was the only thing I could think of!

I couldn't stand to hear a "long" bass solo, but the Ox's work on "My Generation" is probably my favorite "short and sweet" bass solo.

Jaco's in the Joni Mitchell "Shadow and Light" concers. I had it on VHS and lost it but I just found it again on DVD. Just awesome!

I really think bass players should broove - and that every bass line if a solo in it's self.... But as far as a solo in the "traditional" sense - Victor Wooten on Sinister Minister - i wouldn't say it's the best or even my favorite - but it's damn good!

i dono if u heard the live version of californication at the music awards but flea does an awsome duet with there guitarist its awosme its not slappin but its just forkin sweet. honestly i dont care for the slap sound on solos i just like the regular sopund but on notes like realy far down on the neck i think it sounds killer

St. James' line for Stevie Wonder's "I was made to love her" , even though it's a bassline, it's so amazing you might as well just consider it a solo, also Charlie Haden's work on the song "Spiritual" from his Missouri Skies CD..... and anything Mingus/Garrison/Chambers , those guys knew how to solo and when I say solo I mean how to "sing/transcend" on their basses, that's all a good solo is it's just playing some cool melodies that add a new shape to the tune but as this thread shows, how many good bass solos are out there is quite questionable and subjective.

Mobay 45 I couldn't agree more! I love that DVD! The bass solo is not my fav part though; just listening to Jaco behind Joni Mitchell seems like a concert-long solo to me!

You are certainly correct in your observation! But you have to admit that Jaco's solo is surely the highlight of that concert.

I don't have a favourite bass solo, I think they're all unneccessary...

Up until a couple of years ago, I would probably have said something by Jaco but, technically astounding as he was, I now think he's way over-rated.

I'm now far more impressed by basslines I've heard a hundred times before and never really listened to because they are so in the pocket I've never noticed them.
