Okay, now that I've got a Bongo fretless in hand (and my fever has FINALLY broken) it's time to start having fun with it. I've got a few songs in mind already, but I'd like to hear from you fine folks.

What are your favorite fretless songs/tunes?

Extra-credit question: What songs do you like that you think would sound better played on a fretless?

TIA....

After refusing to play the song for years with my band I finally gave in and we no do "Wonderful Tonight" - very sweet on the fretless and one of the songs I do not butcher without frets... ;)

John Mellencamp's version of "Wild Night" is another favorite for me on my Bongo, mostly because the HSp sounds SOOOOO awesome pounding out that riff and the fretless-edge adds nicely to the chorus runs that involve lots of sliding between notes.

Unfortunately for me, this is one song that I do butcher without frets...

Weather Report's "A Remark You Made".

I love that, and Wayne Shorters sax work is just amazing, but I have to add 2 more..Portrait of Tracy, and Teen Town, or just about anything Bunny Brunell has done.

  • Where ever I lay my hat - Paul Young (Pino Palladino)
  • Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel (Tony Levin)
  • Visions of China - Japan (Mick Karn)

  • You're the voice - John Farnham (the bassplayer from Skyhooks???)***

Get the Japan album "Tin Drum" Mick karn's Wal sounds out of this world. Also by the same player " a subway i call you" "Shes got claws"and "Slowcar to China" from the Gary Numan 1981 album "Dance" Pinos playing on the follow up "I assassin" is astounding too.HIs MusicMan sounds outrageously good on "White Boys and Heroes" (funky slap fretless) and "Dreams of Siam"
