Mesa all the way! I have tried others, believe me; have been playing with other guitarists.
The combination EBMM-Mesa is killing and very very musical.
Even the good old Cal.50 blows away any effects loaden transistor amp. If you are talking 'tone' that is. Just dial the gain, volume and eq. and enjoy. You will never want to put down your MM guitar.
Now, with the 20/20 poweramp, the volume knobs hardly go further than '11 o'clock'. It has more power than I ever needed, even on a big stage. Another guitarist in my band had a Line 6 100 Watt rated amp, but his tone got lost in the music of the band, while mine got singing through. (don't have to tell you what he is using now...MkIV!).
Just take good brand for the tubes. I use JJ Tesla: the most musical I have ever experienced. You can 'build' your own sound using the right set of tubes, just visit the site.

Succes.

Play Rock/Blues now doing covers anything from Pink Floyd to CSNY to Take That!!

I love my Marshall Silver Jubilee but I have to say that the F50 combo I have beats it for cleans. I'd love to have a 1 x 12 extension cab for it.
I also use the AER for the Piezo but even though it's rated at 60 watts it needs to be di'd as It hasn't got the head room to cut through the rest of the band

Main amp is a Guytron GT100 (I have two). 2 channels, covers Fender to Vox to Marshall tones. It has an extra 20W output section which is run into a load, then re-amped by a 100W plexi-style output section. Nails that rich, cranked amp sound at any volume.

For smaller gigs or jamming I have a Badger 18. That and and OD pedal and I'm set. (Doesn't sound like the GT100 ... but the gritty sounds are great and it's a fraction of the weight.)

Badger is a great amp. Very rich and, like the Guytron, works at all volumes.

I gig and record with a Line6 Flextone III Plus. I play mostly Power Pop; with a lot of Jazz, Blues, and whatever else that sounds good, thrown in.

When I play live, if the gig warrants, I'll connect my 112 ext cab. I use a Line6 FBV Shortboard as a floor controller and I also run a Marshal ED-1 compressor straight in. Sometimes, I'll run a Boss ME-33 through the effects loop for modulation and delay effects.

I hear ya.

So 18 watts cut through the mix live?

Believe it or not, yes.

I'm not sure how they did it, but the 18 watt amp is unbelievably loud.

Truth is, you don't really need a big amp to get big sound out front. The amp is plenty loud to hear yourself on stage. Since the amp is mic'd, the sound out front is coming from the mains anyway(or at least it's supposed to be). I think the fact that it's 18 watts is what makes the amp sound so much better. You can have a 120watt amp turned to 4, or a 18watt amp turned up to 8. The difference is that you are cooking the power tubes on the 18watt, and getting a fuller tone, whereas on the 120watt, you're getting mostly pre-amp tone, and hardly any coloring from the power section. That's my take on it anyway.

I think I need a Budda 18.

I was test driving a Budda 45 watt head at a store in Cary, last year. It was spring and they had one of the doors propped open. When I flipped the standby and hit a note I set off somebody's car alarm.

I am currently using a Rivera Venus 6 and it sounds delicious. On most indoor jobs I switch it to half power and run 15 watts and that's plenty. I used it outdoors on the full thirty watts last weekend and I was too loud on stage.

My Bogner Ecstasy 101B is the best amp I've ever owned or played... it's the complete package for me. I use it with a Marshall 1936 2x12 with one Eminence Governor and one Eminence Man-O-War.

I don't gig, but I have a Mesa Rectoverb combo that I assume would be great for gigging. It's not back-breaking heavy and it's loud as hell. AND it sounds great.

I also play a Budda 18 1x12 combo. I've NEVER felt like it was too quiet, but its been too loud for some venues. I don't run it completely clean, and I use Gibson SG standard pickups mostly. The other guitarist in my band runs duncans in his SG, and its a bit to hot to keep it clean enough.

So, what pickups do you run in your guitars? How clean do you need your cleans?

For me, I almost never want more than 18 watts- I love my SD18combo and I'm planning on either getting a DrZ. MAZ18 or a Vox AC15 to run in stereo to add some bright to the darker signal of my SD18... I don't really understand people who use high wattage amps. I've owned the marshalls and mesa's, and they just never get into a sweet spot when you need them too.

It all depends on the tone you're going for and the style of music you play. I love a good 18 watt Class A amp, but the tone is completely different than a 100 watt monster like a Mark IV or JCM800.

I have an Egnater Rebel-20 that I absolutely LOVE, but I could never use it with my band. We're just too heavy.

I'm in the market for a very versatile and yet at the same time, basic 50w Amp head.

ENGL Thunder is what has impressed me the most. ANy other suggestions?

In the 25-50W range, that is. 3 channels preferably. Sparkly and resonant cleans, good crunch, and a high gain lead channel.

It has grown since this pic with more rack stuff.
Yes my back hurts, the rack alone weighs approx 175lbs.

Yes it is worth it for my live tone

We play a lot of styles but it's mostly rock & roll and I have a few really great amps that I love the sound of.

Funny thing is though lately for gigs it's been this rig... with no amp. It sounds great and the stage level and monitoring is awesome. I con go anywhere on stage and hear my self clearly and there is no hot spot where I am hearing just the guitar.

It also makes the show easier to mix. I am not selling my amps, but this setup is easy and sounds great.

The "amp" is the Tech 21 Liverpool. It's in the loop of the M13. I NEVER thought i could go amp-less but it is a real alternative with some of the great technology out there now.

The Amps: Laney LH50R,

Wow, surprised to see this here. Had one a few years and sold it a few months ago. Nice sounding amps with the right glass and speakers. Same as the LC50 but the head version. Way unknown and underrated.
