Always try before if you can (but I got mine without having tried it and haven't looked back). As far as new or used, that is up to you, your taste and your wallet. Some colors and options will have to be used. Used Bongos will go for about 800+ depending on condition and options. Some used Bongos have been going from 1200-1500 depending on the "Limited" color. Got to decide between the pickup configuration too. Single H, Double H or the HS. Each is mighty different. The H is the most aggressive of the group (different pup placement) and the HH and HS have some very different tonal fundamentals. ALL are great.
Look around, narrow down what you are looking for and then ask the new/used question.

Very playable, and a HUGE eq/pup system make it a great bass... but I'm biased. Used might be the way to go (once a Bongo hits the used market they tend to hold their value making it easy to sell if you don't like it and not take a bath)

The biggest negative about the Bongo is that your opinion of most other basses will probably plummet.
Which may or may not be a bad thing, depending.
I still think that lots of other basses are cool in one way or another. But I no longer have any desire to own any of them. From time to time I'll run across a deal on something I once coveted and I'll think for a moment about picking it up, but then I ask....
"Gee, what for?"
All else pales before the Power of the Bongo Mind Control Rays.

Hewlio, I bought my first Bongo without ever having played one first because I really liked the looks of them. This is something I have never done before
I loved the first one (a fretless 5 string) so much that I immediately sought out a fretted 5. I see myself buying a third one soon mainly because I want to keep my '05 limited edition looking new.
You ain't gonna go wrong with one of these.
