Finally joined the ranks of Bongo owners!

Hey guys and girls,

It's a slightly convoluted route that I took, but I got there in the end. I had a few grounding/earthing 'buzz' problems with a 2EQ Stingray 4-string, which didn't seem to be resolvable, but I did a bunch of research and played a whole load of basses, and ended up at the conclusion that a 4HH Bongo was the way forward.

On Wednesday my Lava Pearl Bongo arrived and I've been really happy with it since. I've got a white scratchplate on order from the US, as I think this colour looks better with that than the darker ones, but the sound is great - really tonally versatile and nice and comfortable to wear too. Can't wait to play it in a gig-type scenario ...

Although it's a great sound, I won't be getting rid of my original Ibanez Musician, as it has a totally different sound which I also love. It's nice to be able to choose though, depending on what I want to hear on any given occasion.

Have been semi-lurking here for a few weeks, and I really like the spirit and cameraderie, and the fact that there doesn't appear to be any flaming here.

You sound a little bit like me. I now play a Bongo double H 4 but will not sell my 1982 Ibanez Musician, pearl white with an ebony fretboard. That was my main go to ax for many years and although it can't compete with the Bongo, it's a great back up bass and it don't need no battery, you know what I'm sayin?! Probably paranoia seeing that I keep a couple of fresh batteries in my Bongo case, but it gives me a nice feeling knowing that I don't have to panic five minutes before the gig starts.

Slightly off-topic, but what do you think of the Crush amp? Fancy getting one myself but wasn't sure - looks like the smaller model though I guess it could be 35w.

It's not bad, but it is only a practice amp (20w). It doesn't have an active bass input, and both my basses rather overwhelm it with their super-loud output levels! It's nice and compact though, very easy to carry about. One slightly annoying thing is that the power cable is wired into the back of the unit. Also, sometimes the front casing sometimes vibrates when I play harmonics.

My next mission is to get hold of a decent amp to represent my basses' sound better. I only have an old 100w Trace Eliot combo amp (the 'Commando'), which was good when I first started playing, but doesn't really cut it any more. I'm quite taken with a 400w Mark Bass combo that I saw in The Bass Cellar. It was pretty small, but also surprisingly light for such a powerful amp ...
