Hmm, wonder what bass line i should play on my hh sr5 when it comes. Of course ill noodle first, because i do that to get warmed up... and i dont play a lot of cover stuff when im practicing.

Aeroplane will probably find its way in there for slap stuff. Maybe some tool for covers.

I always play "Distant Early Warning" by Rush when I pick up a bass for the first time.

"Thanks, Ben! We care!" ;)

I was gigging each weekend in a country band when I got my first MM in 1990, an SR5. I didn't gig with it much though. The 5th string totally through me off (It was my first 5 string). But I was digging its slap sound, so I started learning some RHCP and tried to learn (tried is the key word here) some Pattitucci and Marcus Miller. Due to circumstances revolving around a move, I had to sell her. First song on it? Maybe RHCP's "Higher Ground".

Strummer - Would it be stupid of me to ask if you are a clash fan???

Stupid? I don't know. Depends on how much Clash you have digested, I suppose;)
But yes, I am a huge Clash fan; they came along at exactly the right moment (I was 11) and they were exciting in a way no band had been before (to me that is).

My 1st MM was fretless and I'd only been playing a couple years, so I'd assume the first thing I [successfully] played on it was a 12 bar 4/4 that my bro stole from Jimmy Smith and taught me it so thoroughly that I could probably play it left handed and upside down. It was the very 1st run I ever learned to play, and I still use it and modify it today.

Of course the above is merely a rationalized assumption. I never know what song I played 3 songs ago, and when I ask Ms Diva, she don't know either cuz she's always on autopilot. The only songs I really reeeeaallyyy remember playing at all are the ones where something goes realllyyy realllllyyy wrong, but even then I couldn't tell you what came before or after them.

The only song I distinctly remember even now is that last week we did 'Aint No Sunshine When She's Gone' and to say we "did" it barely hints at the facts [details too horrible for a family board like this one]. I vaguely remember some horrible takes on 'Summertime', and with the seasons changing here, it's bound to recur.

Next time I buy a MM I'll put a sticky note on it, and not play it until something really cool comes around, and then I'll write it down on the sticky note so later I can say, "I just got my Rolls Burgundy Bongo SCH-P5 Fretless and the first thing I played on it was our Paul Robeson/Ike & Tina medley."

Although I don't own one yet, the first song I played on the first Stingray I ever picked up was Aeroplane by the RHCP. I wanted to know why they were one of the best slap basses out. Now I know :)

First song I played on a Bongo was The Chicken by Weather Report (most probably. May of been Moonlight Sonata, can't remember but would of been one of those two).

After having my first bass for about 5 weeks (SUB5) I'm working on Rush:Limelight and improvising jazz walking bass lines.

Usually, with any new bass I get or try out, I'll do some kind of slap-wanking to get a feel for the neck and gauge the action.
