There's been some great advice posted above! The most important thing is to let yourself enjoy the experience and go with it. I find that pre-show nerves only make my mind clearer and more alert during the actual show...so consider nerves your ally.

...If you make a mistake, don't sweat it, just keep playing. Most likely the folks in the audience won't notice... especially if they have been drinking. :D If you stop... they will notice...

I concur! I once heard a certain guitarist (Mr Lukather, I think) quoted as saying something like this: "If you make a mistake...don't panic, just make the same mistake again...then people will think you played what you intended to play." ;)

I think I read a Larry Carlton interview in which he said that same thing.

my first paid gig was at football club, it was fancy dress. Imagine knuckle dragging men wearing dresses etc. Unfortunately an opposing team showed up and gatecrashed, resulting in an almighty brawl. I ended up behind the PA bins for protection. It made the Sunday paper the next day and the female singer quit. I'm glad that happened cause we didn't have enough songs anyway... Have a great time

Not only is this my first gig ever with my Luke, it is also my first gig ever in general. I'm feeling a little nervous of course, not about the Luke, but about ME!!!!HAHA!!!

How was anyones else's first gig experiences????? I know it gonna be fun, but I'll be glad when it over too. Any hints for stage fright? HAHAHA!!!!

Before every gig, I would have a corona, and a shot of Jaeger. Always loosened me up and totally makes you forget about stage fright, not to mention it just gets you buzzed, not wasted. You def. don't wanna be wasted when you hit the stage (figuratively, not literally haha). We had a couple shows where my guitar player and bassist downed a whole pitcher of beer each and it was the worst show ever. Just focus, have fun, and rock out. Think of it as a band practice with spectators :D.

yep
getting up on stage buzzed up is really something
kinda makes you understand why slash was so drunk in GNR shows
first time i performed my hands were shaking and i coulden't get anything right almost, luckily i was only the 2nd guitar player, now as a lead player i sometimes rock it on a hot night, sometimes i don't.
point is, it's always fun :)

I don't think you could call it a gig but my first time playing in public was at my surprise wedding anniversary party. I had no idea I would be playing.

It was at a local bar here in Brisbane. I was fortunate though. Colin was standing next to me playing his EVH and his wife Fiona was singing. I just played rhythm in the background.

My second time was a solo spot in front of about 80 people where I sang too and then played a couple of songs with... you guessed it Colin.

I'll tell you one thing, don't stress, enjoy the experience, It's hugely addictive. When you're playing in front of an audience it's the most amazing high you can get. I wanted the experience to last all night.

The best bit of advice l got given (regarding playing originals), people don't know how the songs go, if you screw up, they'll just think it's part of the song.

But seriously, just enjoy it and have some fun, cause you might be nervous when you first get up there, but once you get off that stage, you wanna get back up there.

Scott.

Joe...best of luck to you...If you start shaking, get a shot of jager for everyone in the band (if you're old enough) and get the crowd to toast to the band and their very first gig. It will really help release the tension.

We really look forward to hearing how it went. If you have any way at all, try to get someone to video tape the gig...it will be so cool to look back many years from now.

We pulled it off!!!!!! I actually wasn't as nervous as I thought except for a few moments. I'll try to get a few pics up as soon as we download them. Thanks again for all of the great advice and YES the LUKE was dead on all night!!

At least no guitar problems for the first gig, with the LUKE, that was at least one thing I didn't have to worry about!!!!!!!

Joe. The Luke is a fine guitar no doubt. But, I would say if anything was 'on' it was you my friend. Don't be afraid to give yourself a little credit now and again.
