I’ve had my new Silhouette Special for a couple of months, but haven’t had a chance to play it with my band until last night. Until then, I had only played it in my basement on a practice amp. First things first….it was very comfortable to play. I got rid of my Axis Super Sport for this very reason and my forearm was happy with the change!

We played for nearly 3 hours and I had zero complaints with the ergonomics. The neck was also comfortable, but I have to say it can’t compare to the Axis Super Sport. Man, the Axis neck was fantastic. That’s not a knock on the Silhouette’s neck but rather a compliment to the Axis.

This is the first guitar I’ve ever owned with a single coil pickup – let alone three single coils! I really debated whether going with a Silhouette (HSH), a Special with HSS or a Special with SSS. I'm glad I went with the SSS config. It exceeded my expectations.

I was playing through my Fender HRD. The neck + middle pickup position was my favorite by far. What an awesome clean setting. After our first song, the drummer said “that guitar sounds awesome”. About half way through our practice, the other guitarist said the same. I used every setting but the bridge-only position.

I seem to recall Rob (Roblinda2) saying that you have to play better with single coils. I’m paraphrasing there…but I can see now what he meant. To me, the slightest alteration in my hand position (where I was picking the strings) made a noticeable change in sound. I also found it harder to hide mistakes than on my past HB equipped guitars. That’s not a complaint at all. I actually look at it as a challenge.

I do need to change the gain settings on my drive channel to match up with the Silhouette. It didn’t seem to have the same bite or sustain that the Axis SS had. I kind of expected that going to single coils. It wasn’t a huge difference and most of my stuff is played with clean sounds or very little overdrive. It was just the heavier stuff that sounded a bit thinner.

Overall, I’m loving the Silhouette. I would have never imagined owning a guitar with an S-S-S configuration, but I’m glad I do. I WILL own another EBMM with HB’s. Perhaps the 25th, a used 20th, Gold Roller, or maybe a JP6….but the Silhouette Special isn’t going anywhere.

Great guitar EBMM!

Awesome! Congrats on the new guitar. Glad you are digging it. I always love playing a new guitar or amp in a band setting. That's when they really shine or die trying.

I'd love to have a Silo!

Grats on the silo special man! I was especially interested in you comments on the SSS combo since that's what I have on order and since I've never owned a guitar with a single coil in it!

I haven't played an MM90 Super Sport, but the Axis body (while I love the look) doesn't agree with me. I sadly got rid of my Axis Super Sport HH due to the ergonomics. This is why I'm so excited about the 25th.

Yes, the single coils ARE less forgiving... So much so that I've partially forgotten how to play with humbuckers.:p

You should try a SSH Silo Spec next. the tonal options are more useful, and you WILL end up using that bridge pup.;)

Please do me a favor and walk us through your thought / decision process with regards to the three guitars you considered: Silhouette (HSH, 24 frets) vs Silo Special HSS vs SSS and how/why you decided on the SSS variation. I think that would be interesting.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your new guitar! It's always great to see someone bond with an instrument.

mb99zz - congrats on the Silo Special; mine is also sss and I've found that it's completely replaced any desire for an off-the-rack Strat. I know if you're used to humbuckers the bridge single is going to sound different, but I suggest trying it out on some Pink Floyd tunes (Gilmour uses the bridge single a lot for solos) and see how you like it in that context.

Well, I was lucky enough to have a local GC that had several EBMM's in stock. So, I tried a Silhouette (HSH) and a Silhouette Special with HSS. The store didn't have any Specials with an SSS config. I just liked the Special better than the standard Silhouette. The neck and neck + bridge sound on the HSS was just sweeter than anything I could get out of the HSH Silhouette.

So, the reason I went with an SSS over an HSS config on the Silhouette Special....blame that on the AL SSS I tried that same day. I was so blown away with how sweet the AL sounded that I chose chose the S-S-S config for the Silhouette.

In fact, I nearly went with an AL over the Silhouette Special, but I strongly prefer RW fretboards over maple. Had the AL been offered with a RW FB, I would have most likely purchased it over the Silhouette. It was just as comfortable -- if not more so -- than the Silhouette Special. I also liked the neck slightly better on the AL. I just have a thing for RW FBs.

Sorry for the long explanation.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot. I've been meaning to try some Pink Floyd songs on the Silhouette Special.
