Sorry Bove, but he IS ranked as one of the best in the world. Not in your eyes / ears maybe, but there you go.

Aston Familyman Barrett (Bob & The Wailers) was (along with Sting) my original inspiration for playing bass. Flea's one of the reasons I still do. I looked for my EBMMSR4 (Rosewood/Black/Black PG) because of Flea, then bought it cos it sounded better than any bass I'd heard. I LOVE that bass.....

Ranked? I didn't realize there was a test....

the Stingray in that picture with River Phoenix is actually not plain black, atleast i dont think it is. It isn't "sparkle" but it has a weird pattern to it.. when you watch his instructional video, the bass doesnt look plain black... THEN AGAIN, it could just be lots of finger prints? been a while since i watched the vid.

i have an old video of him playing a black stingray with a maple board.

seen several pics of him with black stingrays with rosewood.

seen a pic of him with a white stingray with rosewood.

seen him play a black 5 string with rosewood in the under the bridge video.

thats all the stingrays i seen him with.

i have a picture of his bass guitar rack/road case and there are no stingrays in it, just 2 fender jazz's and a 3 modulus's.

He also "played" a black rosewood Sterling in the "my friends" video...
The black maple Stingray he played was in a live video of "Stone cold bush" I think it was... nifty bass slap solo he does there !! :D

Although not in print anymore, Bassist magazine had a poll and Flea was voted best bass player. I'm sure it happens elsewhere and Mr Balzary is generally deemed to be up the amongst the best.

It's not a 'test', smart arse.

BTW - the bass in the video IS black.

Dude, lighten up. We're just having a little fun here. I don't know how old you are, but most of us geezers recognize the absurdity of polls seeking to rank musicians. Personally, I like Flea's playing a lot. Jack doesn't. But trust me, he's just having a bit of fun.

33 & counting.

I could do with being lighter (about 20 pounds!).

I love Flea's playing, especially on more recent material.

As for polls, I don't know - isn't that how most things in a democratic society are decided? Well except for voting for president in FLA......

33. Man, you're approaching geezerhood. :) I'm 49. It's funny, Flea seems to have toned down his playing recently, but old guy that I am, I prefer his wilder and more frenetic style of the earlier stuff. I definitely like the new, though. Now, I could do without his sock puppet stage look :)

On a slightly related (okay only tangentially; well barely) note; for those of us into the progression of gear used by musicians (no one here, I'm sure), the book "Beatles Gear" is a must. It had me scanning ebay for Hofner's for weeks.

i dont really like him that much at all. i prefer bassists that follow the groove and stay locked in with the drums. either that, or fly off the way into bass paranoia les claypool style. you cant have both.

Locked in with the drums?

Listen to all of Blood Sugar Sex Magik - it's pretty much all he does....

By voting, but it seems a little less (shall we say) controversial than you last election.

That said (and I know some one will crucify me for this), I don't think I'll bother any more - they are a seriously corrupt set of assholes.

BUT - I'm not a massively political fella, so I'll leave it at that before someone pops up & makes an ass of me.

Going back to bass related topics Jon!

JB1, regarding your comments about the controversy in the last presidential election, the only reason there was any controversy at all was because a portion of the voters of Florida couldn't figure out how to properly cast a vote. The only conclusion I can draw from that is that they must have all been guitarists, or worse, drummers. I take that back; most drummers can figure out how to put their kits together.

Flea not playing in the pocket? Huh? Nothing wrong with his groove.

I guess that didn't help! It did all seem a little 'iffy' from over here. Funny how Jeb is now governor too......

Flea LIVES in the pocket.

Can we leave the political crap out of the forum, please? The last thing I want to see is a bunch of bass players acting like they know what they are talking about concerning politics, especially when they only rely on soundbite news to form 95% of their opinion...

As for polls, I think music magazine polls are about the most worthless things in existence--but, you know, if you want to consider a 13 year old's opinion to judge "best," be my guest. Now, if you were to swap out the word "best" with "famous," or "popular," I'd agree with you. Hell, I'll even accept "influential," but that's about it.

Don't get me wrong--Flea is a fine bassist, and compliments his band well. I even admire him for taking up lessons in the last couple of years to improve his craft. His playing on the Gov't Mule Low End dvd is in the pocket, and understated.

But, I still blame him for every poppity-poppity-slappity-plinkity bassist I see abuse a bass in a music store. :D

Bassmonkee, agree completely about the political stuff, though I do read extensively. I guess I couldn't resist the urge to get in a dig at those skinny string wankers.

I did get to play with a new drummer this weekend who made a point of keeping his volume under control and locking in with the bass player who has impeccable time.:)
Is there anything better than grooving in the pocket with a good drummer? Well, there is, but this is a family forum.

I already said I'd leave the politics alone!

Regardless of your opinion on votes - I doubt they're just garnered from a bunch of 13 year olds & that (here in the UK at least) many older and experienced musicians provide their opinions on the matter. I think that's a very general & ill-thought out argument.

I wil condece however, that Mr Balzary is in no small part responsible for every flash-ass kid you see in a music store - which is why I don't go in them anymore.
