OK I might be reaching here, and I may be misinformed, but I just checked the Axis specs and it comes with a licensed Floyd...so I ask, why doesn't EBMM guitars come with Original Floyd's...thanks!

The Floyd licensed trem manufactured by Gotoh for Ernie Ball is a Floyd that's been tweaked out to meet the requirements of Dudley Gimple - EB's main guitar designer - with a couple of enhancements incorporated to meet Eddie Van Halen's needs (including the "looser", "palm-able" trem bar joint). It's actually more comfortable than an original Floyd, imho, and it works just as well. I think it's a pretty nice design over all. I guess is that the bottom line is that the EBMM Floyd is their take on the standard double-locking trem design; like their guitar designs, it's unique...

I personally don't buy into the lore that the only good Floyds are original Floyds. Where is it written that licensed Floyds have to be manufactured wtih sub standard metal and loose tolerances?

Some are garbage. That's for sure. But some aren't.

I don't buy original Floyd Rose is better either. 2 issues that I think have to do with it when Floyd Rose sold out....

1. when Floyd sold the company the new owners started using cheaper parts so quality went down. Remember those crappy original Floyds on Mexico strats?
2. when companies making copies with Floyd patents, some sucked, others were better.

The best systems out there I think are the Musicman version and the Schallers.

The EBMM is just as good as the original IMO... I've owned many, the only licensed floyds you should stay away from are cheapo ones... the EBMM guitars are not cheap as you know, so no worries.

I have a Floyd on my Sil and never noticed this palm muting modification. I bought it back in '97, can anyone show me a photo of the what they are talking about?

Thanks Raz - that is exactly what mine looks like - the only Floyd I have ever had a close look at.

You learn something new every day.

The second one - I have the fine tuners on that upswept part of the Floyd. I had no idea it was different than a standard Floyd - the Sil was my first serious electric guitar

I agree. The Schaller Floyds are very high quality. I had one that would stay in tune for weeks before having to tune again.

I have a licensed floyd on my esp f200, the only thing i didn't like was the clamps on the bridge so i ran the strings through the screw holes and eliminated them. it stays in tune for weeks, i'm impressed with it.

Are you serious, so you don't cut the balls off...almost like a speed loader...can you get a pic up of this?

i can't get a pic of it cuz i don't have a Digicamera anymore but its pretty simple, just take the screw out and the block and run the string through, it don't make any sense to use the clamps to me anymore

I think you're wrong on this one:

the second picture's tremolo is obviously a Licensed version as the text sais on it sais.
But this Licensed tremolo's look is copied from the Floyd Rose PRO.
I was checking out a licensed tremolo on a specific guitar and saw the FR Pro version on the official website and they looked exactly the same only not the same maker ofcourse.

My Kramer has an original Floyd, and they're equally good. In fact, I like the EBMM one a little better. I like the feel of the EB one, the way the bar plays with that little adjustment screw on it. Its a hell of a lot easier than dealing with the bolt on the original Floyd. I also like the fact that the EB Floyd has more rounded edges on all the parts, where the original one is very square, and the edges sometimes dig into my hands if I catch it the wrong way. As far as stability goes, they're the same, once you tune up, stretch the strings out a little and lock it it's in tune until I bust a string or something and unlock it again. Oh yeah, and not having to take the bar off ever is the best thing about it. I always hated having to do that.

+1 on this

I've had 2 guitars w/ original Floyds in them (Floyd II on one) & the MM Floyd on my EVH is the most comfortable I've ever owned. It stays in tune just as well as an original & the angle/feel of the bar is more comfortable.
