Flying high with my bass

Any knuckleheads out there know anything about this? Thing is, I'm off to NYC later on in the year with my bass and wondered if I can take my bass in a gig bag in the cabin, or do I need to flight case it and be put into the hold?

If I can find a great deal in NYC beforehand, I might leave my bass at home and buy one there........the US prices are not to be sniffed at! You Americans are SO lucky!

If you're lucky, you might be able to sweet talk the person at the check-in counter to let you carry on board in a gig bag, but the chance is probably 1 in 50. Actually, for someone flying to the US from the Middle East, the chances are more likely to be 0 in 50.

Better to be safe than sorry, and bring a flight case.

welp.. flight cases are also much cheaper over there.. if he brought it back he prolly could make a bux or 2 selling the bass when he comes home + have a flight for his main bass..

what most likely happens though is that he will be the proud owner of 2 eb's

Rudy's - 48th Street btw 6th/7th aves - great little shop with quality stuff.

Matt Umanov - Bleeker Street near 7th - another good small shop, had a 20th SR 5 in stock recently.

Great info man....Thanks for that. I will most probably pay online then fly over there to collect it. Maybe the Bongo 6 would be in stock by then (November time).

When I flew to California my Bass had to go in the hold with the rest of the baggage.

Also, on arrival, it had to be collected from a different point to where you normally collect your other belongings. That caused some anxious moments (no one had told me)

That would be because the odd size of the flight case means it could potentially cause a traffic jam on the baggage conveyor. Same as surfboards, bikes, prams etc

Check with the airline you're flying a few days ahead of time to see what their rule is on bringing instruments in the cabin. Everybody has different rules,and they seem to change all the time.

Thanks for all your coments so far. I guess the best option for me is to buy a bass when I'm there. Just need to make it sure it comes with a hard case. Will no doubt pick up a bargain!!!!!

I have flight cases for my basses due to airline inconsistencies. Many times it depends on the attitude of the person at the gate whether they make you check it or not. I have seen airlines allow a guitar on board for one flight, then the very next flight with the same airlines requiring that it be checked.

If you value your guitar, best to get a quality ATA case and not take chances in my opinion.

Flight case. I've taken basses across the Atlantic more times than I remember and would never ever risk a gig bag. An EBMM case is just fine.

I see in your sig that you have a 30th. I wouldn't trust the factory G&G case to the airlines.

Don't you worry,The 30th is staying put and also the case for that matter!!!

No, I'm looking to take my 5 string ***land or might buy a Bongo (5 or 6) over there.

Buying the Bongo is my preferred option and will need to ensure the ABS type case comes with it Let's hope they'll have stock when I get there or I'll be stuffed for the course!

FYI, the plastic SKB cases may not be enough protection for guitars at the mercy of bagage handlers. I have seen two SKB cases that had been badly damaged/destroyed because they were either caught in the conveyor belt or smashed by heavier shipping.

I would not trust them. They are great for everyday use, but flight cases are around for a reason.
