What I love here, contrary to general forums like TB, is that you can speak about your favorite basses-guitars, without loosing time having to justify your choice to disrespectfull as****les (no, the Bongo doesn't look like a toilet seat ; no, basswood is not cheap wood...). This forum is biased ? That's what i'm looking for ! I have nothing against other brands (some are making amazing instruments), but I don't want to waist the short time I can spend on forums reading bull*** I have no time to answer. That's why EBMM is, since 2004, the only forum i contribute to.
And from my own experience, I can guarantee that BP is not just promoting his brand. He's truly passionnate and taking care of other fans.

Um...is there a reason why some people can't spell out FENDER?
But anyway, forums can be bad sometimes. Especially for someone like me who's in the market for a bass, and can't make up their minds. I find looking at the public forums like Talkbass a huge quagmire...even though they're a fine forum and there's tons of information there. But it maybe BECAUSE there's so much information there.
Looking first at a bass I'm naturally drawn to the sounds I'm familiar with and want to get close to...mainly from my youth. This means P-bass and J-basses. I've always been drawn to Stingrays though. I love their looks. But then you read on forums weird things like "don't get a Stingray, they're one-trick ponies...get a P-bass instead". Isn't that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black?

Exactly, that's why I don't go there.

The problem with internet urban lore is cliches that probably started with a guy who dimed the treble and bass and then said "This is a one trick pony" Thats why I jump at people stating feelings and opinion as fact.
I think that the best way to dispell the "One Trick PonY" cliche is to force all who say that to listen to IMHO the greatest testament to the sting ray and one of the best bass records of modern times....Peter Gabriel's So. Tony Levin created parts and tones that were milestones. It was a groundbreakng bass record fro me much like Jaco's birdland or hs first solo record.

My Stingray is impressively versatile for a one-trick pony....
From funk through to rock, metal and punk.
Just look at the range of players out there who use their Stingrays in completely different genres, from Bernard Edwards through to Tony Levin thru to metal acts such as Avenged Sevenfold.
I think some people see one pickup and make the assumption 'one sound' ...

For me, and my "right" opinion, I choose EBMM.

On the "One trick pony" theme...
The weird thing is that my SR5 converted me from 2-pickup basses BECAUSE it's so versatile. The EQ is both powerful and musical, and I can go from great single-coil growl to deep woody sounds, and it's got "bass" goin all over the neck.
Of course, now I would like to eventually get a 2 pickup SR5!
What's fun about this place is that you CAN pipe up and comment on what you're doing with the bass you love, and get some good conversation going, INSTEAD of someone saying "well, you're crazy, you should be playing a {insert their bass name}. People here are definitely cool.
BP is totally right about SO .... what a great record. I just introduced my musician son to it. He was amazed.
Off to an outdoor gig this weekend. The SR5 will do everything from walking jazz to Meters funk to the Who...many tricks for this pony!
