could someone please post a pic of a compensated nut vs a "normal" one. from what ive read ive gathered that the comp. nut is for better intonation near the nut ... am i right/wrong?

anywho ... how can one tell if its a comp. nut just by looking at it?

thanks guys

Regular nut looks like this:

Compensated nut looks like this:

See the little doohickies on the Bongo nut?

Dudley's going to have to explain it, but.....the intonated nut should affect the intonation most at the first through fifth frets. As far as I know, it was originally designed for guitars (versus basses) and it should help chords be more 'in tune'.

It DOES make a difference on bass, though - just maybe not as obvious.

Hey, thanks for bailing me out with the pictures! I really didn't know all this discussion was going on, or I would have replied earlier. You see, I really haven't been "lurking" all that much...

Soon ALL MM instruments will be shipping with compensated nuts, except fretless basses, which wouldn't really benefit from it as fretted instruments do. We have discussed offering an upgrade service for older instruments, but at this time we are not setup to do it efficiently enough. We'll keep you posted as that possibility progresses.

In a nutshell, the compensation makes the fretted note at the first fret much more in tune with the open string. Because the instrument is intonated with this compensation, overall intonation is much improved on the entire fretboard. This is most obvious when playing more than one note (chords), but even single notes are improved in the context of any musical ensemble.

OK, I hope you skinny string boys don't mind me piling on Dudley while he's here......

Does your compensated nut system require or benefit from an adjusted tuning temperment?

There's another thread in the Bass Forum about it - here's a link to my questions - LINK

I was going to grill you on this one during the Q&A session at the Open House, thanks for showing up here so we can get it resolved before then....

I think I know the answer on this one

Colin said:
Dudley, does that included MM instruments that have locking nuts as well?

I asked JonG that question once before. I remember his answer because it was:
NO!

Of course I am exaggerationg and mispeeling for effect.
Wow! I think this is the first time I have gotten to shout "NO!" and been correct.

I can't think how you'd manufacture a compensated nut for a Floyd.. it'd be difficult at *best*.

Hey Dudley...I'm currently waiting for my JP to arrive at my dealer. I was told it may arrive sometime late next month. Is it possible that my new axe may have the comp nut?

So we can put a man on he moon, but we can't develop a compensated nut for a Floyd? The way I see it compensated nuts, Buzz Feiten tunings etc are here to stay and improvements and refinements on the guitar are always gonna happen. And that's because of innovative companies like EB. Somebody will do it. Just got my hopes up when Dudley said all MM guitars except fretless would have it. :)

I was just having this conversation the other day and he was surprised that I said I'm not a big fan of the Floyds anymore. But having said that I would never sell my EVH. Can't wait until my Y2D arrives though. :)
