Here is a video of Flea playing some of the newer RHCP songs, from their latest CD Stadium Arcadium.

He's using a Musicman Sterling.

( He hasn't forgotten who makes the best basses :) )

Yeah, Hump de Bump is one of my favorite lines of his in years.

I think the string noise is just because he attacks each note so hard - that whole punk funk thing of his - rather than his set up being unusuallly low. I actually bought a Mod Flea 5 through his bass tech a few years ago, which he had played at a show in Denver. His tech had of course put Flea's set up on it the day before the show, so I got a chance it check it out first hand. Like I said, not unusually low.

Even with the history that bass had, I sold it. I was in a phase of giving them one more chance to impress me. This one had Bart dual J's. Failed to impress. =)

Anyone have the link for that vid of him playing a 30th SR4?

I know Jack is LOVING this thread

Some.

To be clear, I do think Flea is a very good bassist. I simply can't stand the RHCP in any way, and I'm sure it mostly has to do with Anthony and those incredibly inane lyrics. Well, and his lack of ability.

And I did get a bit sick of seeing Flea on the cover of every bass magazine, every month.

He is a great bassist. And his overexposure wasn't HIS fault.

Still.

Well Jack, I can certainly respect your viewpoint on that. The world would be a very boring place if everyone agreed about everything all the time. And I find you to be a very open minded person, and I admire that too. For example with most people, their thinking is "binary". If they don't like RHCP, then by default, they don't like Flea either, and can't acknowledge anything positive about him as a bass player. And that's just an example of a way of thinking - it's not about RHCP or Flea specifically. I honestly don't have any preferences or concerns about who or what other people like. To me, it's not having a certain opinion that's admirable, it's being tolerant of other/differing opinions & viewpoints, and you strike me as that way. So again, cheers! It makes for a great moderator.

I can understand you not liking them, but i've read anthony's book, and a lot of his later lyrics had a lot of deep meaning, such as under the bridge, one that springs to mind.

Anyways, what's with the bridge on that sterling in the video? are you sure that's an EBMM? the shape of the body doesn't look right either.

Say who? The body looks right to me. The bridge is the "Flea bridge", isn't it? But anyone with more insight into the history/background on that, please chime in. I wasn't aware of the Flea bridge until someone posted that SR4 with the Flea bridge in the ebay/craigslist thread the other day.

Not difficult at all. I had a Sterling with that bridge. Bought at the GC Hollywood in 1995. It was #46157, a very nice sounding honeyburst, which I was stupid enough to trade in four years later.

I like the Chillis, but try to block out Flea's more recent basslines from my hearing. He had great tone and feel on their early stuff, but the clang clang rattle wanking he prefers these days is horrendous, IMHO. YMMV and all that.

I'm a huge fan of RHCP. I've loved them since I first heard Under the Bridge. Frusciante is amazing imho.

Here's another sweet Flea vid with the Sterling..
