The last time I heard, Pete DuBaldo still has one of those and would probably make you a pretty good deal on it.

cant remember for sure, but i think there were 5 hh and 5 h models..
and this is the 20th sr5 ultralimited model. i know because:
it has a flame/quilt top. no standard sr5 with that option
it has an inlay stripe which runs along body. no standard sr5 with that option
it has no pickguard. no standard sr5 with that option
it has rear mounted electronics.. no standard sr5 with that option
it has a bfr inlay. no standard sr5 with that option
ebony fretboard
finished neck
20th logo on headstock

i could probably go on for a lil while longer, but i think you get the point ;)

I always wanted one but couldn't afford it. I don't want to say I settled on a regular 20th SR5 HH but I sure would have liked this one instead. If I had the disposable income this would be mine in a heartbeat.

Should I take the chance..?

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum as a member. I've checked it out a couple of times before but never felt the need to post something. That has however changed...

Currently I am living in Japan, but originally I am from Europe (Germany to be precise). During the past couple of years a few EB basses have accumulated in my stable and as of now I am still very happy with every single one of them. But this week I stumbled upon one of the super limited edition BFR SR5 20th Anniversary basses in Tahitian Blue. It is on sale at a big shop in Tokyo and as far as I understood the only one to reach Japan... Therefore it's probably a rare beast and I am incredibly tempted.

I already have a "normal" SR5 20th Anniversary which I like a lot but the Tahtian Blue BFR looks just mega and is a great piece of EB history I think. On the other hand I don't really need another 5 string right now... What am I supposed to do..?

Any opinions? What would you guys do..? And does anyone know at which prices those beauties finally went?

And sorry for resurrecting this thread...

Cheers,
Jens

Welcome to the forum, Jens. That is a rare one. I have seen one in person and they are beautiful. Go for it!

Strings & Things, the UK distributor for EBMM, displayed one at the London Bass Guitar Show a couple of weeks ago. HH configuration, serial 50007. Gorgeous!

Here's a pic again:

Unfortunately they're not selling it, they say it'll stay in their vault, so if you get the chance to buy one - go for it!

Thanks for the replies so far.

The UK distributor is not selling theirs... Oh well. Seems the Japanese dealer feels less attached to the instrument. The sales guy told me they bought it from another shop where it sat in the vault for a couple of years but there is no previous private owner.

I've been there this week, saw and played it and now it's on hold for me until tomorrow. I seem to remember it's no. 50004... It sat there amongst the normal stock, I felt almost a little sorry for it and thought I should maybe rescue it... ;)

Price wise it's a chunk of money for which I could buy 2 normal SR5s and still have plenty of change for strings (maybe around 4000 US$). But then it's a very special instrument and seemingly the only one to reach Japanese shores...

Ahh... Hard decision...

4000 is about half of original retail value.. in us.. so i presume it would be higher in japan. sounds like a good deal to me

if i had 4 grand i would buy it in a heartbeat. heck the regular 20th sr5 cost around 4k here in norway back then

Yeah, that's maybe half the retail. But did they actually sell for this price..?

This one however needs a little TLC, it's not perfect after a couple of years of storage. The hardware needs a slight polish and at least the strings should be changed.

Other than that, I did not find any issues.

if you are buying it for collection value, do keep the original strings :)

give them a haggle and see how low they will go.. nothing wrong with that
