go check out brian culbertsons album called "bringing back the funk"!
he does some covers, some of his own songs and manages to move the old skool funk sound into todays soundscape. sounds like a fusion of steely dan (drumwise that is.. hehe.. think bernard purdie), funkjazz (like eg nils landgren does it) and a twist of smoothjazz like candy dulfer does it
really made my head nod so much i almost snapped me own neck
esp the song called "excuse me, whats your name?"
