I saw Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire last night in Dallas.

First of all, I had never seen EWF before and that Verdine White gets down! He was all over the stage while playing his Ibanez hard. He was a lot of fun to watch.

Next, I hadn't seen Chicago since Jason Scheff joined. He is not only an awesome bassist, but an excellent singer too. He had complete control of his Lakland at all times.

Anywho, we had a lot of fun singing along with the old tunes even though it was a bit warm at this outdoor venue. Since I don't go to big concerts much anymore, I had sticker shock at the price of things. One beer: $6.50 - 8.00. A bottle of water: $4.25. Parking: $12.00. Tickets: $75.00 each. Good show but I'm still not sure it was worth the expense. I think I would rather see some good local musicians in a little more intimate setting.

Verdine has done some very tight playing w/EWF, and I remember back when Chicago was "CTA" & one of the first bands w/horns doing a kind of rock-jazz fusion.

Going to hear live music in concerts or clubs is ridiculous these days. Recently, Kenny Barron, an awesome pianist, made a very rare club appearance here in LA.....Cover charge was $50 with a $45 minimum.
Concert tix are at least $50 FOR cheap seats, I was offered some for $300 recently. I'll pass.
Glad to see SOME performers making a great living, but it is getting to be outrageous to attend some events these days.

I grew up loving Chicago. I saw them in "Lost Wages" about two years ago. Happy to see that James Pankow still has the chops on trombone but that Lee Loughnane has lost some of his trumpet lip. They did "Mongonucleosis" and Lee wimped out and stayed an octave lower in the bridge.:( Oh well, I guess we all have to get old sometime. And yes Jason Scheff did an excellent job on bass and vocals; still not Peter Cetera's voice though.

Pankow does still have the chops. What's up with those moves? Has he been watching too many TV magicians. I still remember when the horn section was in the back. Of course, I saw them on their first tour in '69 or '70.

The finale with Chicago and EWF on stage together playing "25 or 6 to 4" was definitely something to see and hear! :)

EWF... awesome! I'm hoping to get out to see Al Green at the end of the month but like it's already been said... ticket prices are a little staggering, the best bang for buck I've got was last year I was in LA for a bit and we headed out to the Baked Potato and saw Abe Laboriel's 3 Prime trio... 2 sets.... $10!!!!!!!!! amazing! Now, the two cups of coffee cost me $7 but it was worth seeing the Master!!:D

A song comes to mind...

"So never bite the dog,
because he's just a pup!
We'll fight like twenty armies
and we won't give up!

So you'd better run for cover
when the pup grows up!"

:D

I'm just pullin' your leg, jubs. ;)

I know that some of you younger guys like EWF too, but you don't share the history like some of us do. One day you will be going to a show with SOAD or RHCP and having discussions with your buds about the good old days when you had to actually walk to get from your car the your seat instead of just having the 3D hologram beamed directly to you! :D
