Sorry, this is not a particularly guitar related thread. And I'm really not a sensitive type guy in general.
I used to frequent a few forums, like the Eric Johnson fan site, Joe Satriani's, etc... and I've used them to get advice on gear, mods and such. But years ago I stopped because, frankly, when there's no face to face communication, people tend to act like jerks. Subjects that could remain completely harmless (like, say- "what kind of amp do you use?) turn into springboards for snarky comments and unwarranted online behavior. You post your opinion of a show. 15 people blast you because you didn't agree with them. Or you weren't cool enough to realize that it was a "Fulltone Hyper-Fibnobulator Preamp Mega Overdrive Mosfet Special" and not a Fuzzface.
I decided to create an account with the EBMM forum because I was looking for advice on modding a few little cheapie OLP's I came across at a local shop. That was all. I figured that if anybody anywhere would have some input on that subject, it would be someone here. I got some responses. Okay.
Then I start looking over the other discussions, saw some interesting stuff, and decided to participate a little. So far, so good.
Then somebody puts up a fun little thread simply asking "What kind of amp do you use?" I mean, how could a guitar nerd NOT want to answer that question? A hundred or so users responded with simple to detailed descriptions, pics... it was cool. So I posted what I use, which is basically two funky old tube amps and a whole slew of pedals. And the guy that started the thread got some kind of attitude with my post, asked if I was being "arrogant," and went on to somehow imply I was making fun of him or EBMM users in general, and then encourage the "knuckleheads" (what?) to join in the "fight." I think. Honestly, I still don't know what the hell he was talking about.
What the? Huh? Did I miss something? It makes me want to say something like "The $3000 you decide to drop on that custom point-to-point contraption ain't gonna cover up your lame-ass playing." But I have no idea how he plays. He's probably a fine guitarist. The difference is that he gave into his knee-jerk misunderstanding and reaction, and I did not.
It kind of pisses me off, and reminds me (again) of why I stopped doing the online forum thing in the first place.
In closing- ugh. Is it really that hard to just talk about gear?
