Sorry, this is not a particularly guitar related thread. And I'm really not a sensitive type guy in general.

I used to frequent a few forums, like the Eric Johnson fan site, Joe Satriani's, etc... and I've used them to get advice on gear, mods and such. But years ago I stopped because, frankly, when there's no face to face communication, people tend to act like jerks. Subjects that could remain completely harmless (like, say- "what kind of amp do you use?) turn into springboards for snarky comments and unwarranted online behavior. You post your opinion of a show. 15 people blast you because you didn't agree with them. Or you weren't cool enough to realize that it was a "Fulltone Hyper-Fibnobulator Preamp Mega Overdrive Mosfet Special" and not a Fuzzface.

I decided to create an account with the EBMM forum because I was looking for advice on modding a few little cheapie OLP's I came across at a local shop. That was all. I figured that if anybody anywhere would have some input on that subject, it would be someone here. I got some responses. Okay.

Then I start looking over the other discussions, saw some interesting stuff, and decided to participate a little. So far, so good.

Then somebody puts up a fun little thread simply asking "What kind of amp do you use?" I mean, how could a guitar nerd NOT want to answer that question? A hundred or so users responded with simple to detailed descriptions, pics... it was cool. So I posted what I use, which is basically two funky old tube amps and a whole slew of pedals. And the guy that started the thread got some kind of attitude with my post, asked if I was being "arrogant," and went on to somehow imply I was making fun of him or EBMM users in general, and then encourage the "knuckleheads" (what?) to join in the "fight." I think. Honestly, I still don't know what the hell he was talking about.

What the? Huh? Did I miss something? It makes me want to say something like "The $3000 you decide to drop on that custom point-to-point contraption ain't gonna cover up your lame-ass playing." But I have no idea how he plays. He's probably a fine guitarist. The difference is that he gave into his knee-jerk misunderstanding and reaction, and I did not.

It kind of pisses me off, and reminds me (again) of why I stopped doing the online forum thing in the first place.

In closing- ugh. Is it really that hard to just talk about gear?

Upper right hand corner of every response has a triangle with a ! in it. You can report a post and the moderators have the power to make the post disappear.

I do it all the time on nasioc (subaru forum).

what you have to do is understand that it is a corporate forum open to the public and we try like heel to keep it nice...If you leave forums because of one person you will never find one. There is a feature called "Ignore" you should try that...or if there is a thread that you dont like find one you like! Im not saying that in any negative way....you will get the full spectrum on forums....look for the good and let the bad rool off! Thanks

Well, yeah. I guess it just ticked me off. Misunderstanding is one thing, but damn- this one was just plain weird. And I didn't leave the previous forums necessarily because of people being jerky to me... it was more from seeing how everybody was treating each other. Soapboxes are so easy to come by these days.

I have to say that being here makes me really wish I'd kept that little black Silhouette I had in the 90's. What a great guitar...

But I'm not exactly "fiscally endowed," as it were. Hence my desire to get back in the ballpark of the MM game by fixing up this little OLP MM4. Maybe I'll sell some stuff and get a Silo 30... damn. Gear lust is hell.

Hey man - I just went and read that thread - weird is an excellent way to describe what happened, for sure! Nothing wrong with your posts there at all. Sounds like the other guy decided to sign off anyways. As forums go - this is one of the best. Most friendly and congenial place I've found. I don't necessarily post a lot (too busy playing my HH AL! ), but I do read it a lot. Stick around - this is really a fantastic community.

hey, one out of 50 ain't bad?! Some of the other forums, by the time you get to 1 out of 3 the thread is blasting away (usually the same shooters too).

OLP's are (were) a great buy, worth some mod investment. Check out the Sterlings if the money is tight right now.:)

I actually went and read the posts, they were a bit weird, like yourself, l was pretty confused with this members reply.

Those people you are talking about turn me off forums as well, it's hard to display mood/emotion when reading words on a computer screen, so at times it hard to tell if it's a joke or not.

But l'd say stick around, a lot of the folk here are very nice people, very helpful and just awesome to talk to. Just don't let a couple of imbeciles ruin it for you.

Scottie.

I like alot of forums, and I've been in my share of wierd psycho debates over small things that you'd think nobody would ever argue over like you said. But it really doesnt seem to happen here to much, because they keep a tight wrap on things.

There are a few reasons why this forum is more valueable to me than others, like the corporate interaction, insight, and inside look at up and coming products, and great people. Stick around.

Hey Coop-

i can tell you from first hand experience that the OLP is a great instrument to get you in the ball game... i have an OLP MM1F that was my introduction to the forum and had a lot of questions when i first joined- i had some misinformation about my guitar and BP and Crew straightened it out right away...
It's one heck of an instrument that with little money can get you up and running with a quality instrument for a fractional investment.
my first real EBMM wasn't but some 4-5 years later and i bought it off Fingbeales (a knucklehead) and actually you too are an Knucklehead (it's really a term of endearment from Big Poppa) so welcome to the greatest place on the net. Let this one roll and stick around it'll be one of the best resources and insiders you'll find when it comes to EBMM products.

Stick around, leaving gives the person who started the negative thread a reason to think their behavour is ok, i have left forums over this and just got angry that i let it get to me.
A witty retort is better that verbal abuse in return.
Stay Cool!

I find the key is to ignore a lot of stuff. On every forum there are a few guys that just want to start a fight. Combative posts are wrapped around "free speech", etc. The key is to let things go ... if something really bothers you or you're confused, PM a buddy or a moderator so you can vent at least.

The thing that always gets me ... if you got all of these people in a room together, you know there would be a lot less trash talking ...
