Standard user here, couple it with a QSC GX3 power amp and Mesa Recto 2x12. Sounds great, my poor Bogner Duende is collecting some serious dust.

How much gain does the Axe ultra have?

Who sells them?

Rad, as a former fellow PSA-1 user, the Axe has PLENTY of gain on tap.

The triaxis is gone, and the old PSA-1 rig stays in the cupboard for mates to jam with.

The tones are above and beyond anything the PSA-1 could ever do, and the direct recording capabilities are awesome. (Something the PSA-1 could never do properly).

The Axe is a LOT more complex though - you can easily do your head in if you choose to get right into it.

It's also a LOT more expensive.

Axe-FX sounds like a cool piece of gear, but I'm still skeptical. I've never been a fan of amp modeling, but then I've also never heard any of the *good* modeling products out there. The extent of my experience ends with Line6. Don't get me wrong. Line6 makes gear that's well suited for many musicians and I even have a Spider Valve combo which I use as a practice amp. I just love the harmonic richness I get from tubes.

I need to find one I can play with to see what the hype is all about...

To any and all who are particular concerning sound quality / feel / dynamics etc. from any device, whether it be boutique tube amp or "modeller", I respectfully suggest there is only one good example of the latter on the market - the AxeFX.

But you have to be a bit careful in thinking of it as a "modeller" - the designer has been quite specific in his intent - it does of course have amp sims etc. that are intended to capture the tonal color, flavour & nuances of specific real amps, however he has no interest in providing a preset that exactly captures, say, a specific example of a blackface twin with period-specific Jensen speakers and so on. The sims are highly detailed & convincing (in most cases), but he really regards them as starting points from which to craft the exact tones you want, and has exposed the virtual equivalents of amp-engineer parameters to allow you to do just that.

It makes perfect sense, because this whole area is so personal & subjective, and also dependent upon what type of output devices you choose to use.

There is flexibility in the box that is simply not available otherwise, unless you have the experience, skill & deep pockets to purchase a warehouse full of great amps and then tear tham apart & modify, at the circuit level, to your individual preference.

If you're not attracted to the versatility, and only have attention span to twist a couple of knobs, look elsewhere. For for the rest of us - Wow!

(By the way, I like my MusicMan gits as much as the AFX, so please excuse the off-topic ramble.)

One could argue against this premise. Since the circuits in the Axe FX don't actually *change* when you modify the settings, then you aren't truly customizing the tone as you suggest would be neccessary with a warehouse full of great amps.

You're still limited by the circuitry...and the software.

But this isn't my point in saying I'm skeptical. I have never heard or played the Axe FX in person. This is going to be nearly impossible for me...unless I can find someone who has one in the area. Without the satisfaction of being able to USE a product I am going to remain skeptical. I would be the same way with a new tube amp.

I'm going to try to find an Axe FX that I can try...so I can hear it in person. Until then, I'm going to remain skeptical.

Nothing wrong with being skeptical - I would be too.

If you haven't done so, spend some time on the Axe-FX forum, where you'll find lots of info & dialogue, and helpful people. Most of whom have gone thru their own trial periods, and there's also info from people who prefer different ways of using it. For sure not everyone agrees on how they prefer to use the AxeFX.

You may even find someone who's near your location, who would be willing to let you come by and check it out.

These things give me GAS very badly. I love that they are USA made and high quality stuff. I will have one eventually.

I'm dying to play one. The way I look at it, if you have rack delays, etc. then it's probably a no brainer to replace them with the AxeFX, it's a versatile FX unit. Then you get the amp sims for free, whether or not you want to use 'em.

I want to replace my X3 with a fractal. I already have the Atomic and that would be the perfect combination.

I replaced an XT Live with the Axe-Fx over a year ago and never looked back. If you are happy with what you get from the X3 I think you will be blown away by the Axe.

I got the chance to try out the Axe-FX Ultra a few days ago. A buddy of mine just got one for his studio to do re-amping and direct recording stuff. All I have to say is :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

An amazing piece of gear. I'm ditching my G-System/Bogner rig for one of these, a stereo power amp, and another 2x12 cabinet.

I'm planning on using in the studio and live, so we'll see how it goes. I'm really excited.

Man with all the "I'll be skeptical!" posts you had in this thread, that was a quick acceptance! :D I have an Axe-Fx (this is now my second one... tried to go back to tube and I came right back to the Axe!) and I'm loving it! Works well for what I do: jamming at home, jamming with friends and recording soon enough. It definitely does all it claims to do IMO, that's for sure! :D Glad to see another convert!

I was skeptical...until I played with one. That's all it took. And it's usually the way I am with new products. I've been disappointed too many times to just takes someone's word. Line6 comes to mind when I think of the last time someone tried to convince me that any modeling device was really worth it...

I'm keeping the Bogner, but the G-System is as good as gone. If I need to do some of the same stuff as the G with the Bogner, the Axe-FX can do it. Plus, I've already got expression pedals to use.

I've been looking for something more versatile lately anyway. My first choice was a Road King or Mark V and I'm likely to get a Mark V anyway, but the Axe-FX is a really cool piece. I'm looking forward to some of the things I can do with direct recording...

Believe me man, I was in the same boat. I had one and thought maybe I was missing too much without my tube amps so I went back briefly... and said "what was I thinking?!" I do love the sound of a good tube amp CRANKED but that's not really plausible 95% of the time for me since I'm not gigging so there's nothing else I've found that works better than this! :D
