If so, have you been happy with them. Would you describe the sound as vintage Strat?

I'm familiar with Fralins but not in a Silo Special. Thinking of trying a set out. Any comments?

I had Blues in a Strat, that as my life seems to dictate, was stolen. I loved them. An SS Special with Blues has been my planned Strat replacement ever since. With the baseplate of course. lol

Why would they sound different from a standard strat and a sIlo spec?

Cuz a silo special isn't a strat. It's not wired like a strat, has a different body size and shape, bridge, neck, etc.

Dilemma is, I'd like one authentic strat sounding guitar, but I also like the SSS stock Silo Special. So, do I give that up and install the Fralins, or just go buy an inexpensive early 80's squire and drop a set of Fralins in it? Another Silo Special plus a set of Fralins isn't in the cards right now.

I never tried the Blues. Had a couple of S-types (Warmoth and Charvel) with vintage hots and really liked them, but I'm looking for something a bit warmer this time.

I know exactly what you mean, Rob. That's why I've been reluctant to swap mine out. I love the more modern sound and feel of the stock p'ups, but sometimes I long for the vintage kind of clarity.

Well, considering how similar my Silo Spec sounds compared to my strat which have the CS69s in both, I'd say the Silo spec you want with Fralin Blues would sound very much like a strat with Fralin Blues. The SSS wiring is the same as a Strat (with the exception of the Silent Circuit and that super switch). The body size and shapes are indeed different, but they're smaller than a strat, which SHOULD mean that it's brighter. However, looking at how thick the RW slab is on their necks, as well as the use of a 2 point trem, I think that compensates for the brightness.

I'd suggest you simply get a different pickguard, and wire a molex connector to it. Then you could swap easily between the 2 sets...

(Then again, the stock Silo pups aren't my thing, so I'd just dump in the Fralins and be done with it...:D)

P.S. Which part of my Little Wing track didn't sound like a strat? If I didn't tell that it was a Silo Spec, would you know the difference?

Excellent question, so I'll start with this. I listened again early this evening, from far and very carefully close up. Could I hear a difference? Well, my answer can't be at all scientifically valid, since I KNOW it was a Silo and not a Strat. I thought I heard a difference. But if I didn't know would I have said "Hey! That ain't no Strat, it's a freakin' Silo!" 'Course not. So the objective answer is: I don't know. Sounded good, that I do know. Your style and sound go together well.

The pickguard idea is good, and I have been thinking of it. Truth is, I doubt I could wire one well, and don't really feel like trying - eyes ain't what they used to be. The one and only guitar/amp guy has left the area, so I'd have to trust it to a non-musical instrument kind of place to wire it. I've been thinking of sending it out to be done with all the components. But it does seem like the obvious way to go, doesn't it? Given the molex and all. These guys at MM are pretty smart !

Thanks...

Honestly, having tried many many many strats (lost count man... from real vintage to CS Relics) and a few Silos, I have concluded that, the strat tone we like so much is mainly because of general similarities such as woods, platform (bolt-on, scale, non-angled construction) and single coils. NOT so much in terms of dimensions or shapes. Even a Suhr, or a Yamaha or Ibanez with the SAME materials (woods), construction, and single coils would most likely sound so similar, you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart in a blindfold test.

Why I'd choose a Silo over a Strat would simply be the attention to details paid by the EBMM guys rather than tone, which is controllable.

Another alternative, is to order a full pup assembly and pickguard, and then swap the pickups... That's what I'd do, just for the Silent Circuit...:D

Nope, can't do it. I like these stock SSS too much to rip them out. They clean up so nice, and dirty up just as well. Nope, will have to find another place for those Fralins.

That said, on another note, putting the DM Breed in my HSS was a great decision. Still waiting for someone else here to try it s'oze we can compare notes.
