How long does it take to wear down the frets of your JP?

I'm a little worried about this, I play quite hard (especially bending), and for a long time everyday, I've wore down my RG in four years (is this consider fast?). I was thinking how long the JP will take my playing.
I really don't trust those refretting jobs, especially if they're refretting my JP.

Please shed some light on me. Thank you.

Do you use nickel strings or stainless steel?

Stainless steel strings will wear your frets faster. I wouldn't fear a re-fret though. Steve Morse is oin his 7th of 8th set of frets in his #1 guitar, and if a re-fret is good enough for him, it's good enough for me! ;)

I always use nickel strings. I know refretting is not a problem, but the workmanship scares the hell out of me, at least by the local luthiers.

Is it normal to wear out my frets in four years?

It depends how much you play and how heavy your fretting hand is. You can get them leveled every once in a while, once you've done that enough times and they're worn down then you need to get them re-fretted.

If you're concerned, ask a good tech in your area what he thinks of your frets. Then get a second opinion.

I hope I never have to get a refret on my JP, because it's got one of the best fret jobs I've seen. I've seen other JP's, too, and they weren't quite as good as this one I have here.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys are so helpful!

I'll just find a luthier that I'm satisfied with, until then I hope that my frets won't wear down too fast.

I had Gary Brawer up in San Francisco do a refret for me. The best refret job I have ever seen. Of course it took a long time and he took my left kidney as payment.

Care to share how much you paid for it?

It was on a phenolic Steinberger, and it was around $350. A normal fretboard should be cheaper. He uses a plek machine as well.

If it were me and I determined I needed a re-fret, I would go with stainless steel fret wire, most definitely, so they wouldn't wear out as easily the second time.

Ditto on that last one! I've never kept instruments long enough for them to require refrets, but have had many a levelling don over the years. If you stick to nickel strings and get stainless steel frets, you shouldn't see much wear.

I'm sure sending it back to EBMM for refretting will be fine. Just get a Return Authorization from Customer Service first. jongitarz does good work, supposedly. I understand your apprehension. I think if I ever need work done on my guitar, I'm sending it back to SLO for jongitarz to work on it.

Besides, what's the alternative when you need a refret? Buy a new guitar to replace the old one?

roburado: how much EBMM will charge for a refret?

Tim: I'm really satisfied with my tone, if that's the case, not really gonna go for the stainless steel. Anyone had their JP refretted with stainless steel before?

Will EBMM even do a refret at all? Or with frets that are NOT the same size that came stock?
