no really...i find them useful when playing in a dark venue, especially during improvisation. you know, the spotlight is normally on the guitarists and singer, so me and the drummer end up in the dark :p

You either don't play in very dark venues or you are so good that you can play blind and don't need to see what you are doing.

Why yes, I do play in very dark venues. Actually, will be playing in one tonight. Most of the time, I don't look at my fretboard except at the beginning of the song. Once you play a certain bass for a few years, your hands just kinda know where to go.

LED lights look cool but I don't think they're worth the time, effort, and money.

Same here.I've played in some pretty dark places but never dark enough as to where I couldn't figure out where I was if I needed to. I look down alot but mostly so I don't have to look at the people in the crowd.....i'm shy:)

Graphite Neck Advantages

I took the bass to Status and they did all the work. Cutting an extra battery box in the back, drilling through, fitting an on/off switch and then fitting the neck, transferring the tuners across and the setting the bass up.

One word of caution - this is not a cheap exercise and you might end up spending more than you paid for the bass so you have to be really sure you need LEDs.

What is the advantage of having a graphite neck? (Besides the LEDs.)

Thanks,

Stability - It holds it's tune
- I haven't touched the truss-rod in 2 years.
- Not effected by temperature or humidity.

Better Attack and sustain. Very punchy sound.

Different tone to wood.

The slightly lower profile neck of this neck, especially above the 7th fret really suits my small hands and creates a very playable 5-string.

However the bass is no lighter, in fact it is probably slightly heavier.

Looks good, feels good, makes me feel good when I play it. Lights on means show-time. With small hands I have to change position quite a lot and being able to see where you are is a huge advantage. I've recently been playing a 35-inch scale and that is a struggle. If I ever have to do another dark gig then the SR5 is the tool for the job.

There is plenty of info about advantages/disadvantages of Carbon Fibre (graphite) necks on the web. Have a Google.

I say what ever you need to play your best...plus Im trying to be really nice to old blues bass man....(just a little cheap trick to restore relations with those UK guys....)

Graphite has its advantages and is really especially great if the neck is right to begin with.Personally I prefer the sound of wood but if you live in wacky climates or have a dead spot problem this usually cures it.

I also was glad to see the the battery was separate on oldblues bass

Thanks BP. I like both wood and graphite which is why I have both. Just depends on the gig. As far as I am concerned relations are A1 OK. I'm sure you know how irksome us pensioners can get sometimes. Rock on. :D

I like to clamp a drop-light on my headstock in really dark venues. The extension cord can be a problem, though.
