Thanks for the advice. I put all my guitars back in the case for now. I put the slimeburst in my father's guitar room. He has a humidity controlled room where he keeps his guitars. My guitar is in pretty good company now: Tom Andersons, Gibsons and D'Angelicos. He ordered a Luke III last week. Hopefully he'll keep it!

Richie you need to start a thread for the Slime Burst. I don't think many have seen pics. It is stunning.

My local True Value and Home Depot stores both have 3M sponges that have sandpaper on them. They conform to the neck's shape and are great for maintaining the roll-over profile of the fretboard and getting rid of any fret sprout. They'll knock any sharp edges off real quick, then I just go little-by-little until I get the feel I want. Once it's done, only minor touch-ups from season to season.

Good one - I'd forgot about that - works great.

My basement is so dry I’m getting shocks all the time. Ones the hurt and look great with no light.

My frets began sprouting last week and I put in a small slightly damp sponge in my case. Today, the sponge was dry and the sprouting had gone.

Im on LI, NY.. last year my frets protruded out on my BFR JP, i bought a humidifier (oasis) but it never fixed the issue. It never got worse though either. I always leave it in the case, didn't help, could be I have wood floors and an unfinished basement so the cold seeps through (guitar on main floor).

the sponges mentioned (with sandpaper) should one use masking tape on the whole neck, except fret edge to fix it?

P.S. I'd love to see the slime green.

PPS im loving the NY winter for once!

Hi dmc
The way I read Lawdaddy's suggestion was that the sponge/sandpaper would take up the profile of the neck so no masking would be required. A very fine sandpaper should be used as this will invariably take the "sprout out" as in a lot of cases we are talking fractions of a milimeter. After appling the 'paper', finish can be reapplied to the nexk - a wipe over with Gunstock oil/wax, and if the neck has for example a rosewood fretboard on a maple neck, you can apply a bit more attention to the quarter inch or so that shows in relief (on the side) of the neck - I've used something like "guitar scratch remover" which is akin to an ultra ultra fine abrasive - even finer than Ferecla. You can't go "bull at a gate" when you sand the edges of the frets down as you don't want to roll over the outside edges of the fretboard itself.
However if the sprout is so bad that the frets really stick out, rehydration should be the first step and a fret end finishing tool (file) may have to be used followed by finer sandpaper. I remember Tommy in delaware doing a fret dressing on a knuckleheads guitar, and he posted a video clip. If you are squeemish you would have to look away and turn the sound down lol
I would say to anyone - if it's your pride and joy and you haven't done this type of guitar work - Take advice from a good tech - his bench time would be minimal for this type of fix. If it's a real clunker - maybe have a go at fixing it yourself . Dan Erlewine's book on guitar maintenance would be a good start to read up on guitar maintenance?

I guess guitars are like cars - you'll either hand it into the garage for everything or do some/most of the maintenance yourself. If you had left everything to the garage, then maybe just one day you might change the spark plugs yourself on your Ferrari - but mabe change them on a a banger of a car first? :)

Spud: I don't mask. Where I live, the sprout never gets that bad. Nothing like when I lived in Northern Maine or near Reno.

If I had extreme sprout, I would file the ends.

Nope nor me.

Funny thing is I have just been around my mates worksop. He had just installed new frets in a Fender neck and hadn't nipped them back yet. I was gonna take a picture and say "now how's that for Fret Sprout!" But I wouldn't be so cruel (not this time anyway!)

thanks for the reply spud / lawDaddy. the issue is that is a BFR / finished neck, so i can't just re-oil.

It's not terrible, just noticable; and im just curious on my options in case it ever does get more annoying.
Thanks again!

Ok ok. I'll do it some time today or tomorrow. I gotta go get it back from my father's house. He said the frets are back to normal now. I guess it's time to buy a better humidifier!
